I was able to fly with Tropicbird and CFI Eric Herrle in their Cessna 182 in May 2022 while on vacation. I'm an instrument rated private pilot but this was my first experience flying a high-performance aircraft and navigating the local airspace, radio procedures and etiquette, and island weather, and it was an amazing experience. Eric did a great job of being both CFI, co-pilot, and a bit of a tour guide, and after a quick briefing we worked well as a team (I was pilot flying and I was happy to let him do most the radios and verify my pilotage) and he allowed me to balance a wonderful flight lesson (dual received) with unmatchable beautiful island sights. Our flight ended with a short approach to sneak in before a 737 on 9 mile final; the fact the controller was willing to offer us the short approach and trust we would execute it and exit runway in front of jet traffic is testament that the Tropicbird team is professional and trusted by the local controllers! No better way to see the island and improve your pilotage and weather knowledge and I highly recommend.

While flying into Kona for a short vacation, I noticed a small, remote airstrip at the very north end of the island, set amid beautiful, majestic cliffs and dramatic shorelines. I pointed out to my wife, and as a private pilot, mentioned how I would love to land there and fly that shoreline in a GA aircraft. She thought it was a great idea, so we googled airplane rentals in Kona once we landed, and I found Tropicbird. Not only did they have great reviews, but they offered a flight experience in a DA20, which is the same aircraft I had learned to fly in a decade earlier, so there was also a sentimental tug. I called and spoke with Mike who owns Tropicbird. Great guy, we chatted and I booked a flight with one of his CFI’s, Mitch, a couple days after we arrived. The aircraft was in great shape, very professional operation, and pre-briefing with local knowledge and rules was excellent. The flight was a lifetime memory, we flew it just as I had hoped and planned, did a touch and go at UPP (Upolu airport), outstanding experience!! If you’re a pilot, this is a great adventure!!

We really enjoyed flying with Mike on his Cessna C182. As a pilot for his professionalism and as tourist for his deep knowledge and sharing of the island history and geography. He makes it easy going and comfortable for first time flyer. My friend’s teen wanted to start flying after this flight...

This is my second time to fly with TropicBird. Your host, Mike Lauro, is the consummate aviation enthusiast and the office shows it.
I flew the 172 with Eric on this trip with my friend Scott in the back seat. Eric skillfully provided great coaching on Island flying and helped navigate the weather so we could see the volcano, Waipio Valley, and the resort areas on the west side.
As we approached the airport at Upolu Point (at the north end of the island) Eric suggested landing there. Full stop landing and taxi back. Strong easterly winds made for quick takeoff to resume our flight to Kona. Wrapped up the morning with a couple of landings at Kona. Great flying for me and a plane load of pictures for Scott.
Highly recommended for current aviators even if you’re a bit rusty. Also a great experience for those who want to try their hand at flying.

We had wanted to see lava flows but weather was not conducive to that itinerary. Mike took us on a tour that was interesting and allowed us to see the spectacular north side of the island. Highly recommend, we felt safe and valued Mike’s commentary about local history and lore.

Travelling with the kids to Hawaii, I was trying to rent a Cessna with a safety pilot to fly over the Big Island of Hawaii. Surfing on the web, I found Tropicbird wich offers a "Island Adventure Flying Course". This course is awesom and so interesting. You learn a lot on the do's and don't on island flying, the specific weather conditions on Hawaii and the main wind conditions on the islands.
We then made a fantastic flight around the island with a unique view of the volcanos and lava, also the lava flow going into the ocean.
Michael Lauro is great professionnal, very experienced and knowlegeable.

Eric took me and my 14yo up for an hour long class. Eric ran all the key controls and did the landing but I took off and steered the plane throughout the flight until the landing. What an amazing feeling. My daughter sat in the back and took some great photos. The mountains / volcanos were shrouded in clouds but aside from that there's nothing that could have made it a better trip. Ive done helicopters in the past and would definitely recommend this as a great learning + sightseeing + adventure experience. I'll definitely take more classes after this.

I went to the big Island intending to rent an airplane to go sightseeing. Unfortunately I found out that there is virtually no one that will rent Mainland pilots airplanes no matter what their skill level.
What I did find was Tropicbird flight service. They will rent you an airplane along with flight instructor to circumnavigate the island or fly inter-island.
They call it The Island Flying Course. Without a doubt it's one of the most cost-effective and safe ways for a visiting pilot to see the island with his family.
The aircraft was in outstanding condition. The flight instructor that flew with us was a long term corporate pilot and air traffic controller. His knowledge of the local area was outstanding and flying procedures were as good as any pilot I've ever flown.
So if you want the best views of the seven sacred valleys of the Kohala Coast and to dogfight fixed wing vs. helicopters over an active volcano, this is the place to go to do it.
The best part, is that you actually get to fly the plane.

Mike took us for our first flying lesson and it was a blast. Mike not only teach how to fly with patience but also tell interesting stories about big island. The waterfall looks amazing, I don't think there is a better option for viewing the waterfall. Highly recommended and will definitely come back.
