Our guide was well intended but was VERY under trained. Had only led the tour 3 times. Did a poor job of guiding the group through the market, seemed very uncertain of what he was going to say, and made no attempt to insure that he could be heard by everyone. Make sure you get an experienced volunteer, or it will be a waste of time and money.

Interesting

The friends of the market - a local charity offer tours led by volunteers of pike place market. We learnt lots on ours in our little group and although our guide was occasionally difficult to hear, it was much more personable than the tours you saw with a flag to follow and microphones and headsets. We certainly discovered things that we wouldn't have done on our own. We went on a saturday morning when the tours leave at 9 (from rachel the pig) and are free. More are offered during the week, and these are 10 dollars I think. I would really recommend learning some of th history of this fascinating place, before wandering yourselves for some shopping!
