Enjoyed the Spheres!

Interesting viewing of Amazon’s “arboretum” all for its employees and open to the public two Saturdays a month with reservations. We were lucky that we were visiting Seattle on a Saturday open for public viewing. It’s free. It’s beautiful. It’s four/five floors filled with plants, trees, flowers, etc. from around the world in a variety of settings. It was an hour well-spent. By the way, parking is free in the nearby lot on Saturday!

Amazon forest in the midst of seattle cbd.

Awesome place to experience “amazon” like atmosphere in the room. There are place to work, study, and enjoy coffee. It is similar to the “rainforest dome in singapore”, though much smaller. Nevertheless good to have such place in the middle of cold and rainy weather when i was there.

A C- for Amazon

They took Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome and rounded the pieces to resemble a grasshopper's eyes. Interesting, but Amazon had the money and ability to be so much more innovative. I was there within a few months of opening. The plants were impressive with respect to how they had filled in. They looked as if they had been there for years. Good maintenance. Being a bit of a plant buff, I think I examined almost every plant. I expected wild, unknown species, but there was not a single plant that I didn't see back in the plant store I worked at while in college in the 1970s. But they were all in incredible condition. The vertical wall of plants was especially impressive.

Wandering through was enjoyable, but had the feeling of a Disney hotel. There were a lot of clever nooks, each cleverly designed. They are certainly nice, but hard to imagine their stated purpose. The domes are supposed to make Amazon employees more creative during short, stand-ups. Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't see creativity in an organization run by fear.

Looking at every Amazon building around, they look much like other square, cookie-cutter building built in the past 30 years. They do have some technological improvements inside, but these buildings could be a testament to the money and the creativity that this company is leveraging. They are camouflaged to fit in among other mediocre, square office buildings. This could be rated a 4 or 5, if built by someone else, but for Amazon, it's just a warehouse for programmers.

This landmark is one of the few indications that you're in the midst of buildings that comprise Amazon's headquarters. While I have a Prime account and my family orders a lot through Amazon, I have mixed feelings about its effects on small businesses and communities across the US. The Amazon 4-Star store is nearby and worth visiting. It is ironic that the mammoth online retailer has a brick and mortar store after wiping out so many of them.

Hard to get tours, great architecture

We were unable to get tour tickets since they are currently very limited. But we did walk past and around and it is still a pretty fun site to be seen.

Impressive architecture

These spheres are architecturally impressive; interesting to read about how they were constructed. Getting tickets to tour inside is nearly impossible -- tours on 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month via reservations which can only be booked 15 days in advance. And the tickets are gone in no time. You can still do virtual tours on line. Also free.

Pretty amazing

We visited with an Amazon employee during Covid and it wasn't crowded. They have done a really amazing job of displaying plant life from Southeast Asia and South America. Masks required and it takes about an hour and half the see all four levels.

We walked to the area and were interested in the studios below where 4 people were working on things that inspired them...art, sound, poetry, etc. Also we had reservations, but were unable to keep them. Would like to have kept them. Unique space and interesting area.

The architecture of the spheres in the surrounding area is pretty impressive. Our son-in-law worked for Amazon for an internship so we wanted to walk by and see it but almost didn’t. I’m so glad that we did.
