Wonderfully curated and a pleasant surprise

We did not have very high expectations for a free, private museum but we were wrong. Museum was not very large but housed in a pretty building. There were several exhibitions, but what caught our eyes was the exhibition titled: THE THIRD, MEANING: ESTAR(SER) Installs the Frye Collection in which items from the museum's collection were put together in groups of three and the visitor asks to draw the relationship between the works. It was a very interesting way to engage the audience besides asking some deep questions regarding the relationship between artworks and their audience. Kudos to the guest curators for setting up such an interesting exhibition, and we ended up spending much more time on the exhibits then planned (and do not forget to pick up the information booklet). An absolutely fantastic experience

what a find! did not know anything about this museum...was just walking from my hotel to get coffee and they were open...the staff and docents were so friendly....gorgeous building and great exhibitions!

World famous permanent collection not shown anymore

Few of US art museums have collections of late 19-century / early 20-century art that are comparable to Frye, thanks to the founders. This collection was broadly in view as you could see in books, postcards, and just photos from older reviews. The museum proudly shows all 233 items in this collection in on its Web page building anticipation. I was planning to visit the museum for several years to see the collection, but my visit was a major disappointment. None of this rare collection is in regular view nowadays. Over the last few years, the museum space was used almost exclusively for [mostly contemporary art] exhibitions. The permanent collection is shown only in small portions at some of these exhibitions. It is certainly an important duty of every museum to run exhibitions, but usually, it is done without sacrificing the original mission and by removing the permanent collections from view. Unfortunately, the museum Web page gives no hints that the permanent collection is not in view. You can see past, current, and future exhibitions, but there is no word that these exhibitions replaced the original collection rather than running side-by-side. You can only find it when visiting in person after a long climb up the hill. It is really sad that the collection generously provided by the founders to share with museum visitors is now hidden from the public. When visiting the museum, take note that what you see is only the listed exhibitions. Nothing like you might expect from older photos. With this understanding, it is a fine museum with friendly and helpful staff and free entrance,

I find it difficult to describe what Frye is like. It's an eclectic mixture of contemporary and traditional art, and is more than worth the visit (especially considering it's free). There's a good amount of street parking, so be sure to drop by and see for yourself!

Free art museum

This art museum is free to enter. It is accessible by public transport and there is also street parking and a bike rack nearby. They have a cost rack at the front door and you need to check bags at the front desk (for no additional cost). They have free tours of the gallery at 1pm, which we recommend going along to.
They exhibit items from the collection of the Frye family as well as other exhibits. We particularly enjoyed the exhibit on dancer Donald Byrd and the exhibition about photographer Diane Arbus entitled "Pierre Leguillon: Arbus Bonus".

The Frye is an unusual and interesting collection of art, from kids drawings to some very nice 19th C German paintings. A great couple hour visit and it is free.

A visit downtown

My out of town friend wanted to go to the Frye. It is a great museum. Small but worth the trip. We had lunch in the cafe. The food was delicious. It is hard to find parking around the museum.
