Absolutely loved this tour. World class, iconic buildings (some freakin’ crazy!) explained by 2 thoughtful guides, one an architect. Inexpensive. Did the “greatest hits” downtown tour.

We went on the 'Stone to Steel' tour yesterday given by Nancy Day. It was superb and enhanced so much by Nancy's depth of knowledge and mastery in delivering facts and photos. The tour began with construction after Seattle's fire in 1889 and moved swiftly forward from there through many different styles of architecture to the present.
It was only 2 hours long, but it felt like we were taking a master class in architecture, enhanced by references to fashion (an unusual and highly creative linkage).
I heartily recommend this tour (and might even take it again since it was so enjoyable).

Just like previous Seattle Architecture Foundation tours I’ve been on, 'From stone to steel: Seattle style from then ‘til now' did not disappoint. Our guide, Nancy, led us on an exploration of Seattle history through buildings and architecture using culture and fashion to bring human elements to the trip through the years. Many interesting ideas were offered up in connection with the buildings we saw, along with cultural references. Great stuff!! SAF walking tours are always part of our trips to Seattle...always the best two hours spent!

We took Marie Blackburn’s Capital Hill tour on July 17th. It was excellent. Maria shared the history of the people who first settled in the area and explained the styles of architecture used. I learned some new architectural terms too: Shawvian, catslide roof, about Bachalder (?) tiles and about the preservation movement that led to creating the Historic District. Marie's delivery was enthusiastic and engaging. Her stories about the ‘movers and shakers’ in the late 1800s and early 1900s were fascinating.
I appreciated her making room for us on her sold out tour and mentioning some Chicago connections. All the SAF tours I have taken have been excellent.

In a quick-paced walk, guide Steve King introduced us to a fascinating variety of parks and spaces seldom seen by tourists — including the lushly landscaped Freeway Park and Garden of Remembrance. Be aware: there are hills and stairs.

We went on a 2+ hour walking tour of downtown Seattle's art deco buildings, with about 18 other people. Our tour guide was very knowledgable, answered questions easily, and was very friendly. It included tours of several building lobbies, which if it were raining, would be a good respite from the weather. For a 70-year old who walks quite a bit it was not strenuous, but it might be for others if you are not used to the hills in Seattle. I highly recommend this for visitors or long-time Seattle residents.

I've lived in the Puget Sound area pretty much my whole life, and I'm a sucker for local history. The SAF's tours address exactly that- of course, from an architectural perspective, but more importantly with the goal of getting its participants to become more engaged in their communities.
I've done three so far (Design Details, Greatest Hits, Harvard Belmont District) and they were all great. The downtown tours make you take a second look at all those big buildings you might otherwise just pass by. The community tours tell you so much about how changes in history have shaped the neighborhoods and the people that lived in them. All of the tour guides have their own area of expertise, but they all are equally passionate about volunteering(!) to lead these tours. Great for visitors; locals should definitely do a tour to gain new appreciation for the area.

Steve, Aaron, and Nancy took us on an adventure through South Lake Union. The passion that each of them has for this came shining through; that's what really made it so fascinating. History was discussed when it mattered, which is often. They answered both of these questions: What are we looking at? and Why is it here? By the end of the tour, all I wanted to do was sign up for another one.

I thought that this tour did an excellent job of showing the transformation process of Pioneer Square by pointing out the differences in buildings and styles of the buildings.
We went around the entire Pioneer Square area and saw many different styles and also many locations and focal points of interest.
I thought that the tour guide was knowledgeable but also he lacked the "pizzazz" of other tour guides which I have seen and experienced, maybe he needs to be a bit more engaging.
It is about two hours in length and does not include lunch, it is a slow and calm pace for thinking and exploring a few places on your own if you wish at each individual place.
There were a surprising number of locals on this tour as well.

We went on the Diamonds & Gold: The Art Deco Skyscraper Northwest Style tour on a rainy Saturday morning. I can not recommend it highly enough or say enough good things about it
We were taught how to recognize building styles, walked to various locations to view lobbies and were also given history lessons on all that was seen.
My only disappointment was we didn't have the time to take more tours with this organization while we were in Seattle.
Definitely make time to learn about the city in a new way.
