Around every bend there was another beautiful scene. We only did about 5km in from Skogafoss, but saw 5-7 different waterfalls. Clearly marked section of the trail, relatively flat after the initial stair climb to the top of Skogafoss.

Looking forward to coming back and doing the entire hike!

Certainly one of the most beautiful treks done in Iceland. Having more days available you will arrive in thorsmork. The trek starts right from the stairway above the Skogafoss waterfall and enters a surreal, very green landscape, where it seems to live in a fairy tale. We only traveled 7km (one way) and encountered a series of incredible waterfalls, one more beautiful than the other (and of a much higher level than Skogafoss). it rained all the time so on the way back we slipped several times. Absolutely deserves to be seen. There is not a large influx. Free.

Gratuito.

I am writing this review because I don't feel that the reviews I read for this hike prepared me for the experience. I am 55 and have always enjoyed hiking. We generally hike 5-7 miles or so on the hikes we do, often with significant elevation, and love the US National Parks, and Switzerland. In Iceland, we hiked Glymer Falls and Landmannalauger (Mt. Brenistrada), as well as other similar day hikes. I am also afraid of heights, but only on sheer drops and it has never interfered with prior hiking. Glymer Falls, for example, has chains to assist hikers around some funky terrain, but that was fun, not intimidating, and Mt. Brenistrada had some really steep parts. We did this hike in one day. I thought that this hike would be more physically taxing than what I was used to, which it was. It wasn't simply that the hike was longer than other hikes. The hike is between two glaciers and had extensive long really steep terrain and much of it was on gravel and sometimes ice, which made it more difficult to maintain balance. What surprised me, however, was how mentally taxing the hike was on me. There were areas where I was terrified. There was one sheer drop around a set of rocks where my entire foot didn't fit on the path. There was another part with chains and a sheer drop which also was well above my pay grade and was terrifying. One hiker we met on the trail was late for the final bus from Thorsmork and she commented that she didn't know the hike "had so many death defying obstacles". That being said, I know that no one has ever died on the hike, and my 17 year old son did the hike with me and had no issues and loved it. I just wanted to state that you need to be a real hiker to do this hike or be prepared for its difficulties. It is not for people who have a fear of heights unless you go in with your eyes open mentally prepared for the challenge. Finally, we did the hike with a private guide (Midgard) and had an amazing guide. I don't think I could have finished the hike without her guidance. All that being said, I did it, it was one of the best days of my life, and I will never forget it.

This is a 25km hike. You need some proper clothing and especially shoes. This is a real hike, not some “improvised sporty walk”. Can be done in a (long) day but be wary, there are many steep sections that require strong knees and you better not have fear of height! The steepest sections have chains so you can cling to if you don’t feel comfortable.
I did it in 2 days so I can enjoy the views longer and have a nice rest at the Utivist mountain hut.

The hike was strikingly beautiful, despite the bad weather. It has a mix of green pasture with dozens of waterfalls, volcanic chaos mixed with snow, and finally a lush fairy tale labdscape.
This is an experience that you won’t forget.

We did 30km in one day from the Volcano Huts to Skogar. We had originally planned to do it the other direction but had to change our plans due to the weather forecast. We had a beautiful day for the hike. Both "ends" of the hike were spectacular, green and lush - certainly a highlight. The middle was windy windy windy and we covered a lot more terrain on snow than i expected. I do rank it up there as one of the great 1 day hikes out there.

The logistics were a little hard to figure out at first but it is possible to get a reasonably priced (for Iceland) transfer from Skogar to Volcano Huts. This is the only drive that we did not tackle in our rental car because of the one-way hike (and we were glad that we didn't try it.) There was a "shelter" partway on the hike (closer to the Skogar side) that offered us a chance to stop and rest a bit out of the wind.

If you can't do the whole hike, I still recommend the first 8km from Skogar to see the variety of waterfalls (it's truly spectacular) and the first 8km from the Thorsmork side. As one of my friends said when he saw the photos - it's unnecessarily beautiful!

I did the Laugavegur (Landmannalaguar) and Fimmvörðuháls hikes back to back with two nights at Thórsmörk to have a day to explore the popular area around Thórsmörk. On my full day in Thórsmörk the top of Fimmvörðuháls was closed, due to high winds and people were stuck in the huts at the top. It also caused poor visibility around Thórsmörk due to ash in the air. As a result several people had to stay an extra night at Thórsmörk and hike Fimmvörðuháls in one day. For most of them this was manageable as there was a late bus back to Reykjavik. I stuck to my initial plan and stayed at the Útivist's hut at the top of Fimmvörðuháls.

The climb up to Fimmvörðuháls Pass was the most tiring of all the days although neither hike was very technical. The scenery along Fimmvörðuháls is varied. When hiking out of Thórsmörk the views start with the river valley and back over the Laugavegur hike. As you climb higher you being to see glaciers. At the top you pass the craters Magni and Móðie created by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The hike from here gets easier although I had to deal with snow crossings, which did not require traction devices. As you cross over the pass you can see the rest of the trail and the ocean in the distance. The trail from here also brings the most boring one to two hour stretch of the hike as it is barren. Eventually you reach “Waterfall Way” with waterfall after waterfall, which are scenic. The trail also gets busier the closer you get to Skógafoss.

In terms of huts I would recommend Útivist at the top of the pass as it is off the main trail and less busy. It also sits at the top of a hill offering better views than Baldvinsskáli. Neither hut often running water. The friendly volunteer at the Útivist hut melted snow on the stove for everyone. They volunteers signed up for one week shifts. The hut was also fairly warm for sleeping at night, due to the stove.

General hut comments
The huts for both trails are much less spacious and comfortable than the ones on Tour du Mont Blanc or in Torres del Paine (Patagonia). The sleeping pads were 50cm (20in) wide and often shoulder to shoulder in bunk bed configuration. The ones on the Tour du Mont Blanc are at least 65cm (25in) wide. In Patagonia they were typical bunk beds (not shoulder to shoulder). The Ferðafélag Íslands huts assigned you to specific rooms of the hut, which appeared to be set before anyone arrived and therefore not flexible. Being a solo hiker that meant I ended up in larger rooms instead of smaller more private rooms that were given to small groups. If the huts were near mountain road they tended to have pay hot showers, flush toilets and dehydrated food for sale. All the huts had stove, pots and pans for cooking, as well as plates, bowls and utensils. You just need to bring food, sleeping bag/quilt, pillow, sleeping mask and ear plugs. You should book huts in advance. I booked in at the end of Janruary and could not get all the huts reserved ending up on a waiting list for many of them. I did manage to get all the huts booked after tour agencies released their unsold reservations.

Beautiful hiking trail where I’ve caught sight of the most amazing landscapes I’ve ever witnessed in my life. The distance to reach the glacier is too much to be covered in a one-day walking, that’s the only reason why my group and I had to go back at some point.
This hiking can be split in two or more days, taking advantage of a shelter located along the track. Aside from the important length, this walking does not require a big effort, except some steep uphills (which turn into steep downhills when you go back).
