The story of these mills is really fascinating, and I wanted to rate this higher. There just isn’t that much preserved. A lot of the mills are being turned into housing (which is much better than being torn down) but then you lose the history. The visitor center is located about ½ mile away from the actual mill (and an easy walk), and I’d probably start there. The Boott Cotton Mills Museum is the most interesting with the second floor filled with looms, operating and weaving cloth. The rest of the building is a small visitor center and museum about the mill. Another building houses a small re-creation of a boarding house for female workers. It recreates the kitchen, a matron’s room, a dining room and a bedroom. There isn’t anything authentic left, but it gives you an idea of what the boarding house looked like and there are some interesting displays of the life of some of the workers. Ninety-five percent of the building is for other uses. The last mill is Suffolk Mill, which has a nominal fee. You take a shuttle, which takes about ten minutes each way. I was hoping to see more of what was in Boott Mill—i.e. the actual looms, equipment and what the working mill looked like-- but we spent the entire 45 minutes talking about how the canals and the turbines powered the mill. The park ranger who led our tour kept scolding us for stepping slightly away from the group, not laughing at her jokes and not answering questions about the mill correctly. She was way too serious. Still, this is worth a visit. I just think it could have been so much more.

A unique national park experience.

It is a unique national park experience as it focuses on the textile mills in the area, how they operated, who worked in them and how the population of workers changed over time, and how the industry changed. The museum, viewing the mill buildings (some are park buildings and others are repurposed into housing/businesses), and the walk along the Merrimack River were the highlights for us. We didn't see or do everything in 1.5 days and hope to return another time.
The city of Lowell is trying hard to overcome its grittiness. Kudos to them. But it still has gritty aspects that we found a bit off-putting at times but not badly.
We stayed at the UMass Conference Center and Hotel. Great location as it is within walking distance of most of the main sights.

Well worth a visit

This historic site traces the rise and fall of American industry, and they do it very well. It's spread through a number of buildings in the center of an old industrial city. The most interesting is the Boots Mill, where you can see old looms actually weaving cloth. The museums both there and in the visitors center do a good job of explaining what life was like for workers in the mills, how the town changed when industry started to close, and how things continue to change in the post-industrial age.

Also fascinating is the Lowell canal walk. While technically not part of the historic park, this is used to get between the different parts of the park and from the train station to the park. The canals are both pretty and historic, and it was nice to see them.

Fantastic historic park

We started our day at the visitor's center and the ranger told us what to see if we only had one day. He was doing a walking tour later in the day, so we joined him as well and it was so informative and fun AND we got our steps in. :) Loved it!

Canal boat tour

Very disappointed in the canal tour. Did this tour a few years back and it was awesome. The issue now is that the locks on the canal need repair so you don’t get to experience the locks themselves. This is fine but it should be posted on their webpage. All you get is a lecture by a ranger while taking a boat ride down a small part of the canal. Again, this should be listed on their website before you spend $13.00 a person.

A very different National Park

Before you venture into Lowell do some homework first. The "Park" is scattered in the historical district and as such parking is difficult, but attainable, it does require walking, and you should have a strategic plan. We started at the visitors center where you start with the movie as introduction to the "Park" history and complex. Check in at the rangers station for daily information, as things change. Rather than follow a map by ourselves, my wife and I hooked up with a ranger walk that started at the visitors center and ended at Boott Mill. There were stops along the way for discussion in this 40 minute leisurely walk. This strategy didn't require us to move the car or walk back because we took their trolley back later in the day from the Mill. We learned about the canals on the walk, then later toured the Mill, the boardinghouse adjacent to the mill, and took the trolley for another ranger program at Suffolk Mills which bought us back to the visitor's center. A very informative day in this very different National Park.

Lowell NHP integrates historical mills and related museums into a modern small town. The buildings date back to the 19th and early 20th century. The main attractions are a canal walk that circumnavigates the town and some small museums including most notably the Boots Cotton Mill, where period machinery is operated to demonstrate the working conditions. Others include a boarding house and a quilting museum. You could spend an hour or two at the Cotton Mill museum and get a good sense of the place, or most of a day exploring the different areas and buildings and museums, depending on interest level.

Logistically very difficult to park and feel comfortable to enjoy walking the srea.

Not great for older people or persons with disabilities. They want you to park far away where homeless people and people begging for money.. There is not close parking to the Boott Cotton Mills.

Sobering, informative and important

Very interesting place with multiple galleries of exhibits, photos and explanations. The best part was a visit to the Boott Cotton Mill Museum (part of the park), where an actual weaving room was set up with dozens and dozens of machines clanging away, making cloth. This was an interesting, informative, and frankly sobering mini-education in early manufacturing in the U.S.--things I didn't learn in school.

I wish we had allowed more than 2 hours.
