There is a lot of interesting history here - A LOT. Almost too much as it is quite overwhelming and not all of it has explanations. Worth a visit and please leave a donation to help them out.

We happened to passed by this small museum building while walking towards Tutaki Bakery.
Out of curiosity, we went in to have a look. Well, we are not exactly history buffs but it is still nice just to have a look.

Well worth a look - 30 minutes or 3 hours - depends how much reading you want to do!
I loved the sock knitting machine and the story behind it.
Staff are really friendly and informative. Worth looking in the building next door too.

A good local history museum with lots to offer. We enjoyed the sections on local earthquakes and also the Lyell gold mining activity.

We found the museum by accident so decided to go in and have a look. Lots of interesting information about the earthquake, as well as stories of people who did and didn't survive. And an interesting (and previously unknown) story about New Zealand's own "suicide bomber" Murchison 1905. Well worth popping in if you're in the area.

Das Museum ist liebevoll mit alten Alltagsgegenständen bestückt. Es zeigt die Geschichte des Ortes und der Region am Buller River eindrucksvoll. Insbesonders wird auf die Goldgräberzeit und die chinesischen Siedler eingegangen. Sicherlich sollte man in einem kleinen Museum (mit kostenlosen Eintritt) keine spektakulären Wunder erwarten. Mit einem Augenzwinkern kann man eher die gesamte Stadt Murchison als ein lebendiges Museum ansehen.

Stopped in primarily to look at information on the Murchison Earthquake and found so much more to interest us. The vounteer on duty at the time was a mine of information and made the visit more meaningful with her background knowledge of many of the exhibits.

In oktober en november 2016 trokken wij een aantal weken door het Zuidereiland van Nieuw Zeeland. Vooraf hadden wij wat gelezen over Murchison en het museum. Het dorpje zelf stelt niet zoveel voor. Het museum is oud maar er is heel veel informatie te zien en te lezen over met name de aardbeving die hier lang geleden heeft plaatsgevonden. (boeiend). Naast het museum staat nog een gebouw waar heel veel oude voorwerpen te zien zijn. Ook voorwerpen uit Nederland. Echt een aanrader.

We enjoyed the museum and especially its earthquake documentation, but most of all the delightful three ladies who were preparing for Daffodil Day and allowed me to play the pump harmonium in the museum, then directed us to the charming little church nearby to play the lovely piano there. Hope Daffodil Day went well! (We donated in Franz Josef, thinking of you.)

One of those jewels you sometimes find accidently. We stopped in town for a break from the road and noticed this little museum documenting the history and culture of this rural farming town. Lovely volunteers gave us insights to the local history and the artifacts on display gave life to oral and written history. The personal touch makes museums like this truly fun and educational. Certainly worth your time.
