Although small, it's very informative! I would suggest this be your last stop of the day. We stopped here first and learned a lot. At the end I really didn't have questions that the guide was almost begging people to ask anything. After exploring the rest of the day though I learned so much more and had many questions. So learn throughout the city then come here to learn more and have your questions answered.

This was great experience especially if you enjoy peeking back into a time in history. The narrator and the reenactment were well done and informative. Our family enjoyed it from our teenager to our 7 yo- we were talking about even after we left. It’s one of the least expensive attractions so good for those on a budget.

Very interesting to visit and full of information. The mock trial was based on an actual trial and to see how they were treated while being held for trial and/or after conviction was eye opening.

The church pews and the reenactment of the witch trials was good. They gave a well done depiction of what happened to the people accused of witchcraft.

We loved it. Small little play at the beginning and the tour was great. Due to the time of year, we were the only people there for the play and the tour but they still did it. We thought we had to wait for more people to show but they did it for the 2 of us and we got to ask a lot of questions, great guide.

5 minute narrator/host monologue and 5 minute dialogue performance. Then walk through the dungeon with explanations of day-in-life for victims staying in the town jail back then, now called dungeon.

It's definitely a must when you visit Salem! Great experience and a great telling of the rich history of Salem, Mass! The retelling of the trial taught me several things I didn't know about Salem and helped me understand different perspectives!

We visited in September 2022. The museum it self looks better than most in Salem that we had visited but this one sets itself apart from them by having a reenactment of the 1692 witch trials. You are transported back to Salem Village in 1692, to experience the acclaimed performance of a Witch trial adapted from the 1692 historical transcripts. Professional actresses in repertory reenact the electrifying scene, albeit in face masks which considering we were sitting on the second row as the first row was sectioned off due to social distancing, seemed over the top. When the rest of us were not made to wear face masks. After the performance you are then taken down into the depths of the dungeons to see what life was like for those who had the misfortune of been labelled a ‘witch’ shocking conditions very barbaric you can see that this whole hysteria was misplaced and basically if your fave didn’t fit or you spoke out of turn you were deemed to be in league with the devil. You went away with a real sense of shame that this ever happened. Man’s inhumanity to man. It’s not really for kids but it is educational for historical purposes.

Good campy fun! If you’re coming to Salem to see all things witches, than I do recommend stopping by the Witch Dungeon Museum. The experience begins with a brief historical reenactment and then a tour of the dungeon, which is a recreation of the jail where those suspected of witchcraft were held. Per the tour, it is laid out identically down to the dimensions - but it’s hard to tell if that’s true.
The reenactment is okay. Depending on who is working on the day of your visit, it may be better or it may be worse. Hard to say. The day we went, the performance was very low energy. To be fair though, we arrived just days after Halloween, and the actors were probably exhausted. I think my biggest complaint would be that one of the costumes historically and geographically inaccurate. But I’m guessing they try to share costume pieces between the Dungeon and their companion, the New England Pirate Museum.
The Dungeon portion is interesting but dating pretty badly. But there is a level of charm to that. It does smell a little musty though. So, keep that in mind if your sensitive to that. When we went through, it was a semi-guided tour but it seems that may change based on the day and the tour guide. I’ve heard some say it was fully-guided and others make it sound like they were just kind on their own down there.
Overall, it could use a bit of a renovation if they want to keep up interest. The ads and signage outside the building boast it as an award-winning reenactment, but it feels like those days are behind them. The potential is there for this to be revamped into something special and interesting again. This is still a very unique experience when compared to the other museums, as it focuses on the experiences of those who were jailed, tried, and tortured rather than the more broad overviews you get elsewhere.
For those who insist on seeking out “artifacts” and “relics,” this is one of the few museums that has any. A rafter from the original jail is displayed at the start of the tour.
The gift shop is fairly standard. The merchandise is almost identical to that of the Witch History Museum with just the name swapped out. There is also generic Salem souvenirs and witchy merchandise. If you’re in a hurry, you can skip the gift shop and visit the one at the History Museum on Essex street (you do not need to pay admission to shop there).

I have a trip to Salem coming up and don't want to miss out on the witch dungeon. I can't seem to find where to buy the tickets on the site or on trip advisor. Will we be ok if we just wing it. I just don't want it to be sold out!

Just wing it! Everyone who comes to Salem is looking for a different experience...I agree with nosae17 response but sounds like he's more of a history buff than "witch related". Witch trials were only 6 months time out of hundreds of years of history but somehow general public has latched onto this horrific time! Salem has so much more to offer than witches & tacky shops. Take a guided walking tour, check out the Maritime Park & Custom House, do a trolley tour or boat cruise, see Cry Innocent, visit House of 7 Gables, visit Peabody Essex Museum, check out street art in "The Point", visit Ropes Mansion...or if it's your thing visit the "witchie stuff". Walk...enjoy multitude of restaurants...its endless!. I live here and feel like I'm on vacation year round!
How long does it take to go round the museum?

This is not a museum in that there are display cases to stop, and read. You are brought into a large room with pews, and a stage. They perform a version of the witch trial. You then go downstairs to see what the dungeons looked like. If you were rich and could afford it you could have a room of your own. Poor people were crammed all into one small room. They show you the different cells and tell you about what those poor people went through. It was very interesting. They also have a beam on display that is from the actual dungeon that was used. The whole thing is about a half hour, 45 minutes tops.

Which museum is geared more towards children aged 7- 10- the Witch Dungeon museum or the Witch History museum? We only have time for one. Thanks

I would say for that age group, the witch history museum. They both have mannequins but I think smaller children would better enjoy the Witch History Museum.
Any discounts for salem residents

I am not sure but they do have a 3 attraction discount, also you might google and see if they have any coupons online or on the phone app retail me not. Hope this helps. :)
How much is it to go into the museum or is it free

I bought a combo ticket that got me into three different museums: the Witch Dungeon, the Witch History, and the New England Pirate. It cost $19, which is almost three museums for the price of two. Some of the stuff at the Witch Dungeon and Witch History is a little redundant but if you're planning to go to two of these places anyway, you're better off buying the combo pass. It's still interesting to see. You can buy the combo ticket at any of the three.
