If I could rate this place at zero stars I most definitely would, because I was completely underwhelmed and disappointed. It had this urine odor as soon as you walked in the door and the guy we talked to just seemed really off and weird. The enclosures were absolutely awful and some of the animals just looked so sick. This did not look like rescuing to me at all, and anyone can clearly see this is not the best environment for these animals. The enclosures were dirty and not maintained what so ever both inside and out, it was just so sad and disgusting. I feel terrible for those poor babies!

The Luray Zoo is a rescue zoo. This means that the various animals housed here were once people's pets. As a result, there is no predicting what might come the way of the zoo. The animals located in the zoo are extremely exotic beginning with an abundance of highly venomous snakes and continuing to various amusing primates.
The best part of the zoo is the fact that the owner, who is a kind and gentle animal lover, strolls around the premises interacting with both the animals and the visitors.
I am a 52 year old man who has been afraid of snakes my entire life. The owner brought out one of his non-venomous calm snakes and after about 10 minutes he had helped me hold the snake, (Something I never thought would ever happen).
If you are looking for an intense zoo experience with the snack bars and the elephant rides, this is not the zo for you. If on the other hand you are interested in a more up-close experience ... not to mention an abundance of snakes, you will love this place.

We decided to take a chance here on a rainy day. We were surprised at how interactive some of the animals were. Spent about 1.5 hours there. Really enjoyed it, even my 3 teenage boys who don’t like anything!

Hands down the best collection of snakes I have ever seen. There are easily 50 snakes from all over the world. Porcupines, monkeys, birds, and a very friendly goat petting zoo with a feeding station in the back. They even included an outdoor wash area after you let the animals. This is a rescue zoo and was a nice stop during our trip.

the animals were awesome but they were in very small places that you could tell they weren’t supposed to be in you can tell most of them were uncomfortable and for example the turtle is in only water. no other environment at all to be seen. it was only a small box of water. and the alligators were walking around in wood and a extremely tiny pool that not even 2 alligators could get in while there was 2 of them

The animals were all amazing, of course. I just don't understand why they have so many exotic species of snakes in small cages. I don't think it's right. They need to look into setting these poor snakes free back into their designated habitats.
Same goes for the wallaby. The wallaby looked extremely depressed. Made my heart sad. I just hope these people are living up to their name and actually helping these animals and giving them the love and attention they deserve instead of using them for profit.
Not sure who owns this establishment and takes care of the animals these days, but they need to step up their game.
Oh, and there was a sheep who's horns were growing into their eyeballs it looked like which was very disturbing to witness. It's clear some of these animals aren't being properly cared for.
(I looked through my videos and photos and unfortunately wasn't able to find one of the horns on the goat. The wallaby was sitting here just like this barely moving the entire time. This needs to be addressed!)

It was really fun to see the animals, but some of the animals did not have great enclosures. I hope that Luray Zoo improves some of the enclosures to add space and entertainment. Though I am not an expert, I have had pets my whole life. I do not think the alligator turtle, crocodiles, or condor had up to par enclosures, to name a few.

First, it was open Thanksgiving day!
Second, I knew it was small from reviews but I gotta tell ya, we really enjoyed this place.
The array of snakes they had in the reptile room was pretty impressive and kinda made me scared!
The monkeys seemed happy and healthy. They also interacted with us and that was a memorable experience for sure.
I'd say an hour would certainly cover this trip. Lots of things to look at though but the majority is definitely their smaller critters.
I'd go again.

The zoo is pretty small (can be done in under 30 minutes) and outdated. There are two rooms with reptiles, a few monkeys and birds and a petting zoo with goats. I appreciate that it's a rescue zoo so I didn't feel that my money was completely wasted; but it could do better

Hi, we were planning on packing a lunch but I see that coolers are not allowed. Is there food available or even better a place nearby with a picnic table?

Yes! You will be near several places to eat, Anthony's is great for Italian, Burger King, McDonald's. there is an awesome place called FLOTZIE's and several picnic tables there. They have the world's best ice cream for a wonderful treat after lunch!!! All of these places will be across Bypass 211 from the Petting Zoo... Walmart and Food Lion is there too! I do not know if the Zoo has picnic tables but I doubt they do.

There is a portion of the zoo where you can feed and pet some sheep and goats. If you are interested in interactions with more of the animals the after hours guided tour with the owners is great. I don't think they recommend this for visitors with small children though.

The reptiles are housed inside. They are in an exhibit that you walk through in order to get to the rest of the zoo. They can be viewed any time the zoo is open.

They may come as a odd question, but I was interested in booking the King Jacuzzi suite, but I'm a little concerned as to the actually size of the Jacuzzi. Anyone know how big it is? I'm 6'2'' 200lbs as a reference I just wanted to make sure I could fit in it before I spent the extra $25 dollars.

I think you may have posted this question in the wrong place. My review here is for the Luray Zoo, not for a hotel. We stayed in a cabin while we were in Luray that was not equipped with a jacuzzi. Sorry.
