Awesome National Park. This is the southernmost end of it. We day hiked through various sections and brought in Subway sandwiches eating them at the Dundo camping and picnic area. Lots of birds were heard and seen in various sections of the park that we stopped at to hike or admire the fantastic views.

Today we drove through Skyline Drive. We are staying nearby soon we could easily access the park. The day started out grey but that didn't deter us. The leaves are mid-change and the mountains look wonderful. If you have sensitive ears, this will be torture for you. My ears and head hurt from the elevation and winding and it's been that way for 5+ hours now. Take Dramamine or other anti-nausea meds to reduce the feeling.
Saw many people out with their dogs today and that was a highlight.

Nice gift shop at the Front Royal Entrance with clean restrooms. The drive is a nice, slow paced drive through the park with tons of overlooks. The overlooks do start to look the same, lol. We stopped at the Elkwallow rest stop and got some food and drinks. The hotdog with the Virginia Tavern Relish was delish! The orders of fries and onion rings are enough for two people to share. We did the trail to Dark Hollow Falls, worth the walk down the trail. The hike back up gets the blood pumping. lol Also, they allow dogs in the park but dogs are not allowed on the Dark Hollow Falls trail.

Such a beautiful ride down Skyline Drive. The road is twisting and turning so you have to be alert and careful, but it is safe. Many lookout points to get out of the car and take pictures or simply fake in the beautiful scenery. Hiking trails throughout for all levels of hiking. A must see!

We enjoyed this park with the hiking and the beautiful views from the tops of the hikes. The issues we had were weather related with rain and clouds as well as the waterfalls not having enough water due to little rain this summer. On the fourth day of the trip it was like being stuck in a cloud so we didn’t do much hiking because we didn’t think we would be able to see much. Visibility was not great once we got very close to the park on one of the days. The days that we had good weather, the park was really enjoyable. Hawksbill Mountain, Stony Man, Bearfence Mountain, and Mary’s Rock were some of our favorites. The sunsets were also amazing if you have an opportunity to catch one on a hike.

PROS
* National park
* Large amount of interesting nice pleasant hiking trails
* Scenic areas/scenic views
* Many lookout points
* Access from the scenic Skyline drive
* Several rest stops, guides, information
* Several lodges and organized campgrounds
* Closest national park to Washington DC
CONS
* Many of the trails seem to be the same or very similar
* Traveling distances on the Skyline Drive can be monotonous
* The annual USD$30 national park fee
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I needed to be in Washington DC and I was determined to do all the hiking that I could.
I traveled by car alone, stayed at The Cardinal Inn of Luray Virginia, which was very nice and adequate and reasonable (see my detailed review of that). I entered the park at Thornton Gap after paying the reduced senior annual fee of USD$20.
In two days, I hiked Hawksbill Mountain, Stony Man Mountain and Dark Hollow Falls. and visited Big Meadows, Big Meadows Lodge, Big Meadows Campground, Skyland, Pinnacles (all reviewed in detail be me) and Mary's Rock.
I reveled in reliving my history with the park. I started coming here in the mid to late 70s, and climbed to the top of Old Rag Mountain several times, and with minimal difficulty then. I was thrilled to learn now that it is described as "difficult" (no- I didn't try that 46 years later). I also hiked "in the day" White Oak Canyon and others that have faded from memory.
I went back to the fateful place at Big Meadows camprground where I first met Mrs. Place 43 years ago, when she responded to my first greeting her with "and who the H are you?"
Years later, "stuff" got in the way of me coming and hiking here, and then we moved to my current location... but the pleasant memory remains.
WAS IT WORTH THE PRICE?
The annual national parks pass is USD$30 (and USD$20 for seniors) for entry to all of them. I do think that it's certainly worth it- you can't visit the national parks without it.
ADVICES
* Go and hike!
* Keep awake and alert when driving that Skyline Drive (not recommended after dark)

We entered from the south entrance (Rockfish Gap) and drove about half the Skyline Drive through the park before exiting at Luray. Our main goal was to do a couple hikes, but if that's not your thing or you're unable to hike, the drive alone is very pretty with lots of overlooks along the way.
Our favorite hike was Bearfence Trail - it was amazing! I think it will be one of our most memorable hikes ever. There are so many rock scrambles - just awesome - climbing and reaching small summits to take in the views. You'll need hands free to grab and hold. But it's not too much or overwhelming. It's just right for some adventure, without being too long or strenuous. Just follow the painted markers. Bonus is the fact you get to walk on the Appalachian Trail for a portion.
As for the drive, when you get to The Meadows area, there is an opportunity for gas, indoor restrooms, snacks and beverages, picnic area.
The full drive could take quite awhile. Follow the 35mph speed limit. There are AT hikers passing through along the road and of course, deer and other animals.

The park was absolutely beautiful and very drivable! It’s not super dog friendly, but they are allowed on some trails, campgrounds, and visitor centers. The park offered a lot of scenic turnoffs where you can park for a bit while driving from place to place. The restaurants do not stay open in between lunch and dinner so do plan to eat at the lunch or dinner hours if you want the restaurants. The visitor centers were very exquisite and nice with small museums, excellent gift shops, and friendly park Rangers. Definitely a top tier park!!!

The Fall Colors were amazing!!! I spoke with people who come every year just for the colors.
You could stay in your car the whole way and have enjoyed the park. It's an easy park to drive through with plenty of vista spots. One negative is that some of the vistas are overgrown so you can't see "the view".
But the ultimate experience includes hiking and there are multiple trails to choose from. I chose Dark Hollow Falls and even though this was Fall, there was still plenty of water coming over the multiple tiered falls. Very popular even on a Monday so parking could be an issue and it's "down and up" on a dirt path. It is WELL WORTH the hike.
I crossed off another "bucket list" item walking along the Appalachian Trail for a bit.
I ran out of time to travel all the way from the south entrance to the north entrance but I saw enough to "fill my heart."
This was my number 1 reason for coming to this area and it did not disappoint.

A wonderful place to spend the day or even camp. Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and stop at the wonderful scenic overlooks. There are plenty of camping spots, hiking trails and lovely waterfalls. Fall is the best time when the leaves are changing.
