We had a fantastic experience with African Ascent. The guides Elijah and Peter were top-notch, always motivating us and helpful. They took health issues very seriously (measuring our oxygen and heartbeat every night) and watching out for possible symptoms of altitude issues. The rest of the team was also top notch, including Charlotte in the office who was very reactive to our pre-trip questions and gave us good advice.
But be aware Mount Kenya is not for the faint of heart, it is not an easy trek! We also had unusual bad weather for this time of the year including hail, snow and rain, 10 cms snow at the top but.. we made it in part due to the helpful team and guides.

Ciaran Brown of African Ascents, who guided our four day, challenging high altitude trek on Mt Kenya deserves the highest recommendations. An expedition leader of the highest order, his professionalism, knowledge of the Mountain, deep understanding of local flora and fauna made for a memorable trip. Add to this his charm, light touch, empathy and faultless organisation and the result was a life high point. African Ascents is a first rate company and Ciaran Brown a beyond outstanding guide and mountain comrade.

The team at Africa Ascents were incredible on our 4 day climb to Point Lenana. A huge thank you to our guides Boniface & Pete, camp manager Eric, chef Moses, Charlotte from the office and all the amazing, strong and inspiring porters! The whole team were very professional, friendly, knowledgable and made every aspect of our journey as smooth as possible. Everything exceeded expectations, 10/10.
Would 100% recommend to anyone thinking of climbing the beautiful Mt Kenya!

In my earlier review of July 5, 2023, I mentioned how Typhoid caused us to abort our 6 day ascent of Point Lenana.
On February 8, I came back with a friend for another try and successfully summited on day 4 of the 5 day trek on the Chogoria route.
African Ascents fulfilled their promise of scheduling Boniface as our lead guide again. What a pleasure it was to have him by our side.
The last hour of the ascent, and first hour of descent, were more challenging than I had expected due to the very rocky, steep and narrow trail. We evidently had acclimated well because we felt great upon reaching the summit. Boni’s decision to summit on Day 4, leaving Lake Michaelson at 6 AM and reaching the top at noon, was a wise one. This way we did not need to spend the night at a higher elevation. Also, upon reflection, we were glad that the hardest part of the climb was not done in the dark. The sunrise hike out of Lake Michaelson was beautiful beyond words and my favorite part of the whole trek. At the lunch stop during the descent, the porters and camp staff were at Mackinder Valley with our tents in case we were too tired to go further. After a nutritious lunch we continued downhill to our last camp. From there it was a pleasant 3 hour hike the next morning to the end.
African Ascents again exceeded my expectations. Our cook Patrick prepared plentiful and delicious meals, the team of porters and camp staff worked smoothly and tirelessly to make our camping experience as luxurious as one could hope for. We had a hot water bottle at night, a basin of warm water in the morning, a comfortable latrine, a warm sleeping bag plus pillow and mattress. Our Camelbaks and water bottles were filled every day with fresh water and we had snacks during our hike. Also, Boni had a few pleasant surprises for us during the trek.
If you want to climb Mt. Kenya, I don’t believe there’s a better company than African Ascents to help you succeed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our five-day ascent of Mt Kenya through the Chogoria route. Paul and Peter were wonderful guides, and they as well as the rest of the company made us feel very safe throughout our time in their hands. The premium over other trek operators on the mountain was worth every penny in our minds, as the accommodations were comfortable, the food excellent, and the guides first-class.

I run Blue Mountain Adventures, a guiding company in South Africa, and apart from many local trips I also, from time to time, run a guided experience to Mount Kenya.
This year I used African Ascents for our logistical company on the mountain. Right from the start it was super apparent how polished and professional this company is.
Our chief guide Boniface is a real mountain man – strong, efficient, gentle yet affirmative and an all round super cool dude.
The trip up the mountain went really well, the food was delicious, the equipment excellent and the briefings each night were well done and professional. The pace on the trek was governed by Boni and he kept an eagle eye on all the clients.
Except for one of the clients, who succumbed to altitude sickness, everyone reached the summit of Nelion, where we were joined by one of the local climbing guides, David.
David is a solid climbing guide, who knows the mountain backwards and we were super happy to have him along.
A huge thanks to African Ascents for their professional approach and giving us every chance to make this a successful expedition. I will definitely use them again on my next Mount Kenya trip.

We enjoyed a 5-day trip with African Assents - a loop from Chogoria Gate to Lenana Point. We were a family of four; two boys aged 11 and 13 yrs. All used to hiking, but not to altitude.
From the initial conversations with Julian through the the walk itself we felt very well looked after and that African Assents really cared about our trip and making sure we enjoyed it. We were given good guidance on what to take and what would be provided. They were flexible with our dates and helped make a route that worked for us.
Our guide Paul was extremely knowledgeable about the National Park and the wider area, he taught us a lot. He also monitored our acclimatisation and ensured we were safe on the mountain, selecting a suitable route to get used to the altitude while also being able to successfully summit on day 4.
The assistant guide, cook, camp manager and the porters were all excellent and made the trip work really well for us. The food was very good (pancakes, chapatis, dal, pasta, stews, eggs, wonderful salads...) and we all enjoyed the hot drinks and snacks (popcorn, cake, biscuits) in the afternoon after a long walk.
The overall walk was incredible; quiet with hardly any other people around, varied landscapes, challenging but manageable walking, different birds, animals and plants to see, amazing views every day. We are so glad we did it.

The 6 day Chogoria route to Point Lenana seemed perfect for my husband, cousin and me. I had asked Charlotte what would happen if one of our party was unable to continue the trek. Her detailed response made me feel that we were in good hands. During our second night I got sick. Our guide, Boniface, suggested we spend an extra day at Lake Ellis, because if my symptoms were caused by the altitude, I would most probably feel better the next day. I was worse the next day and Boniface said they had to get me to the hospital. I still hoped that I would feel better at a lower altitude, so walking down seemed a good option. Boniface and Peter (assistant guide) carried my husband’s and my pack on top of theirs and we made it down to the Chogoria gate where one of African Ascents’ cars picked us up for the ride to the hospital in Nanyuki.
African Ascents is a first class operation. The tents and sleeping bags were comfortable and we especially enjoyed the hot water bottles we found in our sleeping bags each night. A basin of hot water left outside our tent each morning added to our comfort. Also, there was warm water and soap available at all times for hand washing in camp. Health checks in the evening and the suggestion of minor changes to the itinerary made us feel well taken care of. Sleeping in a tent when you have to get up every hour because of gastrointestinal problems is extremely uncomfortable, but with some tips from Boniface I made it through. The guides’ concern, kindness and help were priceless.
Charlotte met us at the Nanyuki hospital where I was diagnosed with Typhoid. I was given intravenous fluids and medications. Boniface, Peter and Charlotte stayed with us through the whole ordeal and didn’t leave us until we were in our rooms Charlotte had arranged at Kongoni Camp (a wonderful place to stay in Nanyuki). She stopped by the next morning to see how we were doing and arranged a game drive at Ol Pejeta. A must see if you spend time in Nanyuki!
I am disappointed that we did not summit, but thanks to the way African Ascents handled our situation and the attentiveness of Boniface, Peter and Charlotte, I look back at our adventure with a smile and gratitude.

Another great climb of Point Lenana very well organised and guided by African Ascents. Elijah is a first class guide, thoroughly reliable and incredibly knowledgeable, well beyond the narrow remit of trekking, he also has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of Mount Kenya and beyond. The whole team, including the office staff, were thoroughly professional and enthusiastic. We had a fantastic experience and strongly recommend them.

The most magnificent ascent of Mt.Kenya.
Extremely professional, the guides are experts in flora & fauna and the camp staff was impeccable; nothing was overlooked and everyone was very friendly and caring.
Can't wait to climb Mt. Meru & The Ruwenzori's with African Ascents, once available.
