I was due to be climbing Mount Toubkal for Christmas and this was cancelled by an employee, VIA EMAIL (no call, still now) the night before my flight with no way to contact the company and the leader in Morocco refusing to answer his phone. All based on medical information that was disclosed both before I booked and when I booked and that has been signed off by a doctor. The employee has refused to refund for the trip even though they have cancelled at the very last minute and refused to compensate for loss of flights, accommodation, travel costs, parking and more importantly the emotional, physical and mental preparation that went into this for months as well as single handedly ruining my Christmas. On top of this he has tried to gaslight me and acted in a hugely unprofessional and immature manner. After speaking to many others seems this is not a one off. Legal action now being pursued. Not member of ABTA (can see why!)

How sad… The most disgraceful business I have ever encountered. I would now not touch these guys with a barge pole.

Day after I paid (which I was immediately chased for and threatened with losing my place), I was taken into surgery. I immediately contacted them (with almost two months notice) to make them aware and to seek a refund or even a postponement booking for the winter or next year. They said no, as it was not exactly two months as per their ‘policy.’ They exercised no grace and I ended up spending weeks emailing back and forth (sometimes ignored) pleading for help with my unfortunate situation.

Whilst I fully understand the importance of terms and conditions, this was an incredibly rare situation, and I even gave them almost the full two months notice.

Regardless, they made little attempt to resolve this for me, and instead suggested (as goodwill) that I postpone within two months. I explained that I would not be fit so soon after surgery, and that it might jeopardise the hike for everyone else. They couldn’t care a less. There was no regard for my recovery from surgery - They were actually happy for me to attend a trip with other hikers (face palm). Naturally, I now have huge concerns regarding their duty of care.

Over all, both managers were unhelpful when it came to a head; lacking empathy, compassion, grace, and displaying utter greed. In general poor businessmen, as is evident.

I made it clear, as a Producer/Director for BBC / C4 / ITV, that I will review them and they responded with (paraphrased) “it’s not appropriate to use (the BBC) to attempt to ‘coerce’ Skyhook into waiving its rights under terms and conditions -accepted at time of booking. If you do use the BBC to air your concerns, as a matter of fairness and impartiality, that we will have an opportunity to respond through this same medium.” Absurd response to an unhappy customer who happens to be a journalist.

As a matter of fairness and impartiality, future customers must know the truth. Nice try guys. Unfortunately for Skyhook I also make travel and adventure documentaries too.

Sadly, Skyhook lacks both decency and decorum and from my first hand experience, I advise against using them.

AUG 2022 - Oh and months later, they have tried everything to have this reviewed revoked - awkward, embarrassing and irresponsible.

Best wishes
JP (Reviewed by BBC/ITV/C4 Producer/Director)

Hi Jacqueline, as mentioned on Trustpilot, we do feel this review is a little misleading as the BBC have confirmed you don't work for them. Their message included "...We don't have a member of staff with this name, or similar." Here is the full reply we had posted: Hi Jacqueline, sorry to hear about your negative experience here. Unfortunately, we can’t offer refunds or free date changes for medical reasons, less than 2 months before the trip. This is because at this point the local guides will make all the arrangements for your arrival (e.g., booking accommodation and transfers). However, as you have already taken out travel insurance, we’d highly recommend you make a claim using this (as it’s exactly what it’s designed for). You can print your invoice directly from your Skyhook dashboard to do this (and find the travel insurance number you’ve entered there). If you need any other help with this, please do let me know. I do appreciate it would be easier to get a refund from the local guides (through the Skyhook platform), but in this case we must also be fair to them. Please do remember that all trips on Skyhook are run by small hand-picked local guiding companies (typically with just 1-3 guides), so things like this can also have a large financial impact for them. We do appreciate making an insurance claim can take a little more time however, so my apologies for that. Finally, we do completely respect your right to leave a review and share your opinion. However, we did contact the BBC specifically as we were understandably a little concerned, and they have replied saying that you don’t work for them. We do feel this is therefore a little miss-leading for other readers of this review. However as mentioned we completely respect your right to voice a complaint, and whilst we can’t change our decision on this matter, we are still very happy to help with anything else and/or provide any information your need for your insurance claim.

I have been in contact with Skyhook throughout the pandemic to confirm my situation because a deposit was paid and due to my flights being cancelled and Norway remaining shut to visitors and we are supposed to travel on 26th July. They tried to get me to pay the remainder of the balance which I refused. They are now trying to say I cancelled the booking and are refusing refund. I have emailed Alan Cooney the CEO who it seems is now not available for contact after confirming I wouldn’t be getting a refund. This company is totally unethical. I wanted to treat my sons to an amazing event for leaving school and that’s what the money for this trip was for. I cannot believe that with no travel for the UK, Norway being shut and difficulty with any flights regardless of shut down they are trying to keep funds. Utterly shocking and I will be taking this further

Hi, thanks for leaving your review. By the way, we do respond to all messages within 1 working day - so if you feel a message has been missed then please do send it to us using https://www.skyhookadventure.com/help/contact and we'll pick it up for you right away. Unfortunately we can't see your name here to look it up for you. If your trip was cancelled by us due to Covid-19, you would have been eligible for a full refund. However if you cancelled your booking when the trip wasn't cancelled (e.g. by clicking cancel or not paying the balance by the deadline), unfortunately you wouldn't be eligible for a refund. If you cancelled the booking however, you would still have received a lifetime deposit credit (for the deposit) so that you book back on in the future without loosing out. I hope that helps!

We did a 12 days EBC Trek in October with Skyhook and their fantastic team from Freedom Adventures (Phura Gelzen Sherpa, Phura 2, Anil Raii, Santosh Sewa and all porters). The trek was simply unforgettable. We were very well looked after from the moment we have landed in Kathmandu. The accommodation in the city and in the mountains were great, places we have eaten offered variety of tasty meals, we had access to hot showers and wi-fi wherever that was possible. Trekking was never boring as Phura and his Team entertained group with songs and dances 😊 and they were supporting us during those difficult times making sure we are drinking water and taking breaks.
We truly had an amazing time from start to finish and will highly recommend Skyhook and Freedom Adventures to anyone who is looking to do EBC or similar trip. Huge THANK YOU to all for looking after us and for those beautiful memories you give us!

Mt Toubkal trip

First I wanted to thank the support prior to the trip, they were always very helpful and promptly answered all my queries. Also, all the online process from booking till registering was very smooth.

Secondly, the logistics worked well since our arrival to the airport and the transfer back to Marrakesh. Furthermore the group was really nice and friendly and everybody got along nicely. The hostel in Imlil was good, providing a comfortable accommodation prior and after the summit.

However there were some relevant issues, which I was not expecting after reading all the great reviews online. Despite being nice and polite, the guides were rushing the group during both days. On the first day, since our departure from Imlil, they established a pretty fast pace, which was really hard to follow for a part of the group, with very little pauses to rest. One colleague had a mild bronchospasm as she was asthmatic and they kept going, both in the front of the group, sometimes with a significant distance from the rest. Another member of the group and myself decided to wait for her and to stay behind the group, in order to support her. We were not sure why there was such a hurry to get to the mountain hut, as we arrived around 15h and had no other activities until our departure the next morning to the summit.
For the summit hike, I believe there were significant issues that could have had severe consequences (luckily nothing has happened, but in a wild environment like the mountains I think it is better to be safe than sorry). We were suppose to wake up at 2:30 to start the hike around 3:30, but after dinner the guides decided to postpone our start to 4am. Around 4:15 we started our ascent and we were told its was a very steep one, but they guaranteed the pace was going to be much slower than the 1st day, with plenty of stops. For our surprise, after the first 1/3 of the hike, they started to accelerate, saying that we would miss the sunrise otherwise. Also, there were literally no stops from the beginning till the top of the mountain, except 2 or 3 times when the group decided to stop on its own, leaving the guides walking alone (I have never heard of a summit day with no stops at all). After no more than 1-2 minutes, the guides then rushed us to start moving again. The same person from the previous day had to stay behind, and nobody knew if she had given up or was still going up (one of the guides stayed with her). Around 4000m, another 3 people were really exhausted from the hike and began to stay behind. But still it didnt make the front guide to stop or change the pace. After around 5- 10 minutes, one of the girls started to show signs of hypoxemia and was very irritated, saying that she could not proceed any further and therefore was going to descend back, by herself (it was still very dark and it was a tough part of the hike). The guide simply stayed still and didnt offered at first to provide any support or to help her or calm her down. I had to convince her that the best thing to do was to rest a little and remain with the group, since we had only 10 min to reach the summit. Moreover, at the same time, another person from the group who was Type I diabetic began to feel ill, with nausea, dizziness and blurred vision and was left behind by himself, later on we found out that he almost passed out and was vomited a lot. The guide didnt notice his absence during the final hike and for another 30 min, when the group then asked where he was. He was lucky that the other guide was still coming up with the remaining girl that I mentioned before. From the 8 people in the group, 2 could make it together with the guide, another 4 (myself included) were left on our own to finish the last portion of the hike, and the last girl and the other person came after 20 minutes.
On the way down, again there was a big rush to arrive at the mountain hut, but one of the guides stayed with my wife and I since we usually go down slower than the rest. But we were surprised that, after almost 25km and 11hrs of hiking , there were no snacks or even water for us to drink when we arrived at the hostel (around 17h). We were lucky to have brought some protein bars on the bags, otherwise we could have stayed another 3:30h without food or liquids, when dinner was served.
I have done some mountains before but I have never experienced any of those issues. The guides were always supportive and were there for you. This was the first mountain experience for my wife and I was expecting it to be an unforgettable memory for us. However now she is really traumatized and is saying that she never want to do it again. As it is stated in you website and facebook page, I really dont believe those were the best guides, they were not ethical and definitely were not always looking for our safety.

I truly hope this review may help future hikers and also your company, preventing any future incidents

Hi Alexandre - dropping our response here as well in case you didn't see it, as I can see we replied on a different review site. Hi Alexandre - thanks for the feedback and I can see we've replied to your emails, but I wanted to follow up here as well. We very much appreciate the detailed feedback, and I want to reassure you that we had taken these concerns very seriously. Whilst the guiding team has previously been trained to the very high standards of the UK Mountain Leader syllabus, we have taken the precaution of adding in some additional measures. I can confirm all the guides participated in and have now completed mandatory re-training to make sure everyone is following best practice on safety, and also ensuring a comfortable trekking experience with regular breaks at least every 30 minutes. Having collected feedback from subsequent trips personally, this has been very well received. In addition, we had spoken to the specific guides on your group as well as the other trip members to get any feedback that they had. As the most popular provider of Toubkal trips in Morocco, we take great pride in raising the bar with safety, as well as giving a kick-ass experience. In general we've had over 1,500 happy customers and good reviews from this trip, but we're always keen to improve and do more. I do appreciate some time has passed now since our original emails, but if there is anything else we can help you with please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks, Alan

From start to finish this trip was amazing. On meeting Phura Gelzan Sherpa at the hotel I new we were in good hands.
Everything was explained well each day and the atmosphere was very relaxed.
The views you get on this trip are second to none and the guides are very knowledgeable of the area.
I would also like to say a big thank you to the porters who carried our main bags between the tea houses.

My husband and I just finished our trek to Everest base camp in Nepal and it was incredible! It was the trip of a lifetime. Our guide lakpa sona and his awesome dad/guide nuru were especially exceptional! Lakpa was everything our group needed and more. He was very knowledgeable throughout the trek and made the entire experience more enjoyable. Although our tour group started as strangers we ended as friends, including lakpa. We were a bit crazy at times but lakpa stayed professional throughout while still making sure we had a great time. Not only was he our guide for EBC but he stayed with us till the end when we finally departed Kathmandu (even after we missed our flight). He knew cool places for us to go and made sure we enjoyed our trip while staying safe. Also big shoutout to the porters! We would not have made it to the top without any one of them!! Would thoroughly recommend to any family or friends.

I had a very difficult experience with our guides in Morocco. They were polite and nice, but other than that they were always in a rush. The first day they were going so fast that we arrived at the base camp around 2 pm with maybe 2 stops of 10 minutes and a couple of minor stops ( we hiked 3000 meters). The next day we started at 3:30 and as always our guide was in a rush. At 4000 mts one of the clients ( diabetic was not feeling well and left behind.. and btw the guide didn’t even noticed one of us was missing).
To sum up, my first mountain was terrible and I do NOT recommend SKYHOOK
