Apesar de sermos informados no Turismo que a igreja estaria aberta, o mesmo não aconteceu. Mesmo assim valeu a pena pela sua arquitetura e posicionamento na cidade. Uma torre muito interessante como que "amarrada" ao templo.

Seit ca. 20 Jahren wird in der Kirche restauriert, noch nie habe er sie geöffnet erlebt, sagte der örtliche Reiseführer. Also: Interessant von draußen, aber das war es auch schon.

La parrocchiale di Ribeira dedicata a Nossa Senhora da Estrela, è un bell’edificio del Cinquecento che domina l’abitato dall’alto di una scalinata. Architettura tipica delle Azzorre e interno abbastanza ricco che meritano un’occhiata.

Situata in una piazzetta che sovrasta la bella cittadina di Ribeira grande, si trova questa magnifica chiesa che sovrasta il paese da più di 5 secoli. Imponente il campanile.

Ribeira Grande lends itself to very pleasant city walks. The church is one of main attractions and stops during such a walk. It is located on a hill with the monument of Dr Gaspar Fructuosa in front of it. He was a Portuguese priest and historian. There are quite a few steps leading up to the church but the climb is worth your while. The church consecrated in 1517 and called Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Estrela is truly beautiful. It has a white fasade and massive basalt bell tower. During our visit there were still some decorations from a fiesta. Inside the church is even more impressive with altars, chapels, carvings.
There is a lovely view from the top of the stairs leading to the church.

Cuando visitamos el pueblo tuvimos la suerte de verla engalanada porque eran fiestas y estaba toda la fachada llena de luces, además estaban celebrando una boda por lo que estaba muy bonita por dentro.

We visited this church on our own while exploring the town. You really do not necessarily need a guided tour. From the main square you turn right and chances are the church will be visible. It is located on a hill with many steps leading to it. There is a monument at the base of the stairs.
The whole town is easy to explore on foot.
