I thought I would be very claustrophobic going round this submarine but thankfully was not.
We had a very interesting and experienced sub mariner to show us around and explain the workings of this craft and life on board. We are full of admiration of the sailors who worked on submarines and those who continue to do so today.

Three submarines to see from the 1901 Holland 1, a midget sub and the WW2 Alliance. The staff giving tours had a wealth of interesting knowledge about life on board. Fairly pricy, but also includes the Museum of Naval Firepower about 2 miles away. Waterbus connects the two museums and goes across to Portsmouth.

This attraction is part of the Portsmouth Historic dockyard, but is set across a harbour from the main site. It is absolutely worth a visit on it’s own and a day pass also gets you into Explosion! The munitions museum, also more than worth a visit! Those two together will give you 4/5 hours of entertainment and there is a really great bar / burger and dog place (also pies) for lunch. The subs are fascinating m, especially the huge one. However, get the family annual pass, because the rest of the dockyard is fabulous and the family pass is incredibly good value!

We visited this brilliant museum as part of the Portsmouth dockyard ultimate explorer ticket.
We drove from London and parked for free!
We stayed there for four hours,there is so much to see,including going inside a submarine!

A superb portrayal of the life and work of the Submarine Service; Holland 1 is thought provoking, the garden of remembrance a sobering reflection and the security provided by the nuclear generation is very well represented. There’s lots of interactive content but sadly around 1/3 of it wasn’t working correctly and detracted from the overall experience for a family with teenage visitors.

A wonderful day out at the museum. Roger our guide around the submarine was fantastic. A submariner himself his knowledge and presentation was first class. The museum itself was also very informative. A great place to visit

We revisited the Historic Dockyard specifically to see this museum as it was shut when we visited earlier this year.
We were left a little disappointed as the main submarine that you can actually walk through, only had one guide at the entrance where the forward torpedo are. Without any doubt the experience of walking through the submarine gave a taste of what life was like for the people that could spend days under the waves. The rooms that were made up were very atmospheric, but they lacked any explanation about who would be they, what that did etc.
In the visitor's centre the X-submarine was well done, with very informative information boards. The same could be said for the submarine museum, it was worth spending the time reading the history of this Naval branch.
The separate museum with the Navy's first submarine brought a real historic perspective to this branch of naval warfare.
Around the site were static displays of propellors and torpedoes - all gave a good perspective on submarine warfare.
Overall, a worthwhile visit, but the main attraction could give a visitor so much more

The submarine gave a good experience (with some imagination) of what it was like to live and work undersea. The guides were experienced sub mariners and very keen to share their stories. Do arrive by ferry from the Dockyard but check times as you may have to wait some time to return. You can drive to the museum as there is a car park adjacent.

Not impressed one bit. For £24 I expected some sort of guided tour. No. I was told to make my own way through, following people and people following me. I arrived at the exit thinking I must have missed something so went back in at the entrance and went through again. I asked a guide? who was sat in the middle a couple of questions to which I received one word answers,,no information was forthcoming so I gave up..he definitely didn't want to be there. I felt I'd been ripped off.

Hi Claire,
The Gosport ferry is probably the easiest, it departs from Portsmouth Harbour train station and is about a 10 minute walk from the Submarine Museum on the Gosport side.
If you would rather drive round there is free parking available on site, and it is about a 45 minute drive from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

We want to visit HMS Alliance and the submarine museum. I want to know if we can get a ticket to that.,and if we could get a ferry there. We've been to the historic dockyard already. The website doesn't seem to work. We'd like to go on Mon or Tues 14th 15th Sep.
