The word “temple” is misleading as the nomenclature is simply Kirti Mandir. It is the birthplace of the Father of the Nation. Nicely built and well maintained. Comprises his birthplace, a museum, a library, a photo gallery, a shop et al.

On way to Somnath from Dwarka, we had done stopover at porbunder to visit kirti mandir and sudama temple. Very well kept place, one gets to learn so many facts related to Mahatma Gandhi. We saw the exact place where he was born, see his house, charkha and table and some important moments of his life well captured in the photo wall.

It all happened in 2016 summer vacation.i was on my way back after visiting memorial house of Gandhiji-kirti mandir.I was happy as i had got a good photo of kirti mandir,I was busy looking at that photo again and again.
My car was going through a road while I was having a look at those photos.i started smelling something strong.i stopped looking at kirti mandir photos and started looking from where the smell was coming from?
I just saw a small lane coming as my car moved forward!I saw a SPICE MARKET.i had seen many market in gujarat but the spice Market turned to be one of my favourite one!
If you ask me what made it to be most favourite out of all the the market - it was AROMA.there were not just a single spice,there were many spices,the outcome was different aroma which was amazing.
The aroma was just moving in the air.if you blind fold me and leave me in this market without telling me prior,I would guess this market without getting it wrong
The whole environment was busy,kind sellers and happy customers!and the most amazing thing was it was cheap and finest quality!we rarely get this type of combo
I bought most of the spices from the market for the future use and it was over within a year.sigh!I miss them and I am definitely going to buy them again if I get to travel Gujarat again!

Porbandar though historic in terms of ports, sea trade, is easily most famous as birthplace of father of nation bapu mahatma Gandhi. This 17 th century abode hosts the reminiscent birthplace , humble beginnings of man whole world idolises. The room, the kitchen, utensils etc are at display. Definitely a must visit when at porbandar

Porbandar is connected by flights from Mumbai and rail via most major places, the roads are excellent and the drive nice. The place is famous for its migratory birds in the winters and can be a photographers delight to visit the close by wetlands and lakes..Their kathiwadi food is also a must try..
Its nothing but a humble home, place has history attached to it if you believe in the philosophy of Gandhi and have any take aways from it. There is some memorabilia there but that is it. So if you happen to be in the town then one could visit it else as I mentioned previously.....
The location is pretty simple but parking is an issue, though incidentally there is ample parking in the vicinity so its better to park at the designated spot and walk it there. Some jewelers on the way could interest you.
If you do happen to go there the peanuts of that place are a must try.
Porbandar is a small town and should rather can only be done on foot as the roads are too narrow to drive in. Their Bandhej fabric prints and tie and die is well known and could be picked up...
Have a nice trip...

Having been passing through Porbandar, it seemed inappropriate not to visit this place which includes the home in which Mahatma Gandhi was born. The name Kirthi Mandir comes from the Kirthi Mandir police station which is near by. It is situated in a very narrow street in the busy part of the town. Cars cannot go. One has to take Autorickshaws which are available for modest charges. Largest part of the building is relatively modern and contains a museum, a book stall and an office. Left side of the quadrangle in the building contains the home in which Mahatma Gandhi was born. The house has been preserved more or less intact, albeit with some periodic repair and maintenance, without changes. It is a two storeyed building, with narrow wooden stair case. One has to take support of thick ropes suspended from the ceiling to climb these narrow and steep wooden steps. The spot where Mahatma Gandhi was born is marked with Swastika Symbol. Above this symbol, there is a large life size painting of his parents.
The museum contains the Charaka, spectacles, slippers and seat used by Mahatma Gandhi.

Beautiful place. The home of Gandhiji was a 3 storey building. Compact rooms. There is a museum adjoining the home that showcases various photographs and local manufacturing taught by Gandhiji

We visited this place while traveling from Somnath enroute to Dwarka. Known as Kirti Mandir, it has the humble birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi on oneside of the premises. The rooms, having no fans but good ventilation, are well preserved for the visitors to show the simple way of living in those days. The premises has a museum containing Gandhi's period. It is a memorable place of visit.

Kirti Mandir has clean toilets but I am unsure about a nearby restaurant to have drinks.

Guys - Any idea where to park the car near Kirti Mandir ? I am concerned as Porbandar roads are very narrow. I don't mind to park 2/3 Kms before if good parking like shopping malls are available.

One of the best parking spots is right opposite Sudhama Temple. It's about 1.5 Km from Kirti Mandir.
