Whilst staying in Leyburn my wife & I decided to walk the Shawl to see the beautiful views of Wensleydale. We followed the path on past the Shawl to the end & as you walk on through the trees a great view of the dale opens up.
Magnificent views across & along the dale. On the way out it was a little misty but on our return the mist cleared leaving us to enjoy this magnificent part of Gods own county. Well worth the longer walk. An easy path to follow & mostly level.

A great walk. The views are spectacular looking over Wensleydale. We were staying in the area in our motorhome and caught a local train from Finghall Station to Leyburn. Fabulous market in Leyburn every Friday

This is a wonderful walk that shows off the beauty of The Dales to perfection. The walk is easy and the views are stunning. The lower and middle end of Wensleydale is laid out in front of you with views into the distance forever, with a helpful, tastefully presented, topographical explanation of the locations. The wildlife is prolific, we were blessed by many aerobatic displays by swallows. Well worth stretching the legs even if like me you have less than perfect mobility. Lots of benches for a breather.Go!

Beautiful! Didn't find the footpath in Leyburn (very obvious and signposted!😬) and the OS map took us up a never used path onto the Shawl further on. Completely overgrown with nettles and v steep. Relieved to get to the top having trampled millions of nettles and briars (as I wore long trousers but my husband was in shorts). From there onwards an easy walk 😃 with wonderful views.

The view!
We took the Wensleydale train from Leeming Bar. Well worth the walk through town to the Shawl, views are spectacular. We added a little walk for the dog.

Well sign posted from Leyburn market place this walk can be as short or as long as you wish.
Sheep graze so if you have a dog be prepared for using the lead.
The views are stunning and with an engraving explaining exactly what you are looking at you can appreciate the scenery even more.
Whether you are a seasoned walker or someone who looks for something less challenging this is for you!

Beautiful walk- a highlight of our trip to Leyburn. The views are fantastic and our children (5 and 8) managed the walk.

I visited on Monday 06th June 2022. A short walk from the town centre, the Shawl field provides stunning views over the dale and includes at the entrance a detailed history of the site as well as on the site itself a metal guide to what can be viewed from this viewing point. Not very large but free and worth checking out if in the town for any other reason rather than a destination in itself.
