Be prepared to brave the road, but weel worth it. Need 4wd fir the winter/spring, but you will be rewarded with great vistas and adventure. Allow 1 hour 15 mins both ways

lovely lake with a great setting, are there any fish in there. Good drives nearby. Well worth going in here

Enjoyed staying here for a couple of nights in February and doing some walks. Great scenery. We experienced a moderate wind at times and had tent securely pegged so come prepared to combat the wind if necessary. Lots of place to pitch tents or park up in appropiate camper van. It is about a 40km gravel road in from Hanmer Spings. There is a small open shelter available with information boards and there's also a couple of longdrop toilets.

Lake Tennyson is about 40 mins from Hanmer on a mostly shingle road. It's a good road, mostly, although an ORV helps. The upper half of the road has amazing mountain valley scenery and the lake is crystal clear and beautiful. Trout fishing and mountain biking opportunities abound. And a night camping is well worth the effort. Make the trip - it's worth it!

Its only 42 ks from Hanmer township, so makes a great day trip or over night, It is always windy there, so shelter is a must, I round my motor bike all the way and really loved the changing landscape, had lunch and a walk then rode back to Hanmer, its nice to site in the hot pools after the trip

We visited early in January
There was only one other camper
The scenery is fantastic
We were lucky enough to have quite a cool day with some low cloud that only added to the beauty
Snow on the peaks and their flanks still which made it chilly
Will definitely return

A drive over Jacks Pass into the Clarence River valley and up to Lake Tennyson is certainly off the beaten track. You are driving on private roads and they are not well maintained. This area is so barren compared to the Lewis Pass area, but a good drive, though NOT in your family car.... At the lake there is a shelter with a table and information boards about the Molesworth Station.

The lake is a really nice setting. Good parking to be had and toilets on site. Very picturesque and quite popular from all accounts. The road in from Hanmer is easily accomplished in a standard car in summer. In fact, I was surprised to see two English caravans there. Road is dusty and corrugated in parts.

About 34 km North West from Hanmer village. My wife ran 10km over the Jacks Pass track and I picked her up in the car at Tophouse Rd. We drove the gravel road to Lake Tennyson where we had a picnic lunch beside the Lake. You can boat, swim, fish for trout or just lay about. The day was hot & sunny. There are free unisex public toilets (3). The area is accessible on foot, mountain bike, or vehicle. There are numerous other walks / trails in the area.

I just love visiting Lake Tennyson. Sometimes its in a gentle mirror like mood with snowy mountains reflected, Sometimes its in an Angry mood with winds whipping the surface to a storm. DOC have a shelter here with descriptive panels of the early run holders and the people who lived and worked this land long before the motorcar.
