Jaigad Fort.
Jai means victory and gad means fort; therefore, one would believe that it was named after a victory in some notable war. However, as per legends and common folklore, it is said that while constructing the fort unforeseen and unexpected obstacles prevented completion of the fort. Despite every possible effort the fort could not be completed. Eventually after the advice of soothsayers and astrologers, it was decided to perform a human sacrifice. A young lad by the name of Jaiba Malhar Volunteered to be sacrificed. After he was sacrificed, the fort construction was completed quite soon. To honour the memory of that valiant lad Jaiba, the fort was named Jai Gad.
The fort was built and completed by Bijapur sultans. After being ruled by Naiks who had successfully defended against the Portuguese and the Bijapur forces, the fort eventually Balaji Vishwanath Peshwa, passed on Jaigad along with some other forts to Kanhoji Angre who was the chief of Maratha Navy. As with the rest of India, eventually, Jaigad fort also came under the control of the British.
Over the ages due to neglect and the ravages of time all the palaces and buildings within the fort are in ruins. The only place still in good repair and maintained is the Ganapati Mandir close to which stand the ruins of a palace of Kanhoji Angre. The ramparts and the walls are also in fairly good shape testifying to the solid foundation and construction.
Going around the fort and its ruins is quite interesting. There are three main ruins. There is no authentic information available about those ruins. There is a two-storied ruin, our guide informed us that it was repaired and used by the PWD department. White ceramic tiles in bathrooms and the presence of water pipes and other modern construction materials bear testimony that this ruin must have been made usable by the said PWD department. Why did they want to occupy it or why did they leave it, to fall again into ruins is not known.
Even in this dismal condition, the fort attracts a lot of tourists. It is high time that the tourism department and the Archaeological department of India did something to improve the condition of the fort and make it more tourist-friendly. The least they would do is lay out a path in a manner that the tourist does not have to worry about falling due to the bad condition of the tracks. Also, erect information boards near the major ruins giving information about that ruin. Make a garden with shade trees, and benches where tourists can rest and relax for some time before resuming their tour of the fort.

Jaigad Fort is one of the attractions people visit when they are staying around Ganpatipule and Malgund. The fort is in ruins, nobody is around to tell anything about the fort. The only amazing thing about this fort is the mesmerizing views of the endless sea. The color blue has its own charm. You can find a spot and just sit for hours in peace as there is hardly any soul visiting. If a big group, plan a picnic day out there, I am sure it would be fun.

It is an old dilapilated fort that reminds us of the history of Jaigad. The sea views from the fort are stunning and are feast to the eyes.

This fort is situated on very strategic location.It is built on sangam of Jaigad River to the Arabian Sea. a few visitors were scattered inside. There are superb views of the sea from parts of the fort. This is one of the many forts of Shivaji. However, this gorgeous fort is not being maintained properly. There was no entrance fees and not any guide service. There is one superb Lighthouse also near this fort which is worth visit.

The once upon a time opulence of the fort can be felt by the now ruins. There's no entry fee, and a few visitors were scattered inside. There are superb views of the sea from parts of the fort. This is an opportunity lost for the govt & tourism agencies....this place could be transformed to be a major historical attraction.

हा एक महत्वाचा प्लेस आहे तसेच हा एक ऐतिहासिक किल्ला पण आहे. बघण्यासारखे किल्ला मध्ये असं काही विशेष नाही पण किल्ल्याच्या वरती जाऊन तुम्ही समुद्रकिनारा बघू शकतात तसेच सूर्यास्त चा चांगला नजरा बघू शकतात.
ह्या किल्ल्याचा संरक्षण खूप गरजेचे आहे हे महाराष्ट्र सरकार वर नेवर आहे की ते कसं ठेवतात.

This is a short drive from Ganpatipule - the views from the top of the fort facing the sea are amazing. Its worth the climb/ walk along the wall of the fort to catch the view .

This fort is one of the many fort of Shivaji Maharaj. It is situated on very strategic location.It is built on sangam of Jaigad River to the Arabian Sea.
I am deeply disappointed by Ignorance of Government towards this gorgeous fort. If this property was located in some other developed country then its real value emerge.
There is entrance fees to nor any guide service is there.
There is very big Jindal Steel Co opposite this fort. That Co can adopt this fort in CSR activity.
This fort is approx 20 km from Ganpati Phule beach and approx 45 km from Ratnagiri town.
There is one superb Lighthouse also near this fort which is worth visit.

Reach RATNAGIRI by superfast trains. Take local auto to Rahtagar bus stand. Buses for Jaigarh starts from there. 45--57 Kms, depending g on which road they go by. On return, get down at Ganapatipule, a superb beach and we'll maintained temple.
