We participated in the 4 pm tour which lasted about 45. We were the only guests so our guide spoke English instead of German . He was super knowledgeable answered questions let us take a ton of pictures. His English was excellent.

This is the only castle in the Rhine valley which was never destroyed in WW2.
Built in the 13th century, it was never besieged by Germany's enemies because of its strong fortification.
The Gothic Hall has impressive kitchens and the Gimbel Collection has life size armor and weaponry worn and used through the ages.

This was one of the many highlights of our June Rhine river cruse. Well worth the time. The walking is moderately challenging due to the inclines and the stones.

The castle is very well maintained. You can't get into the tower and upper quarters since it is inhabited, but there is a lot to see with the rest of it. These are guided tours so you are not going to be able to spend lots of time in places but you are there and able to see a lot and the history you learn of the Castle is interesting. It overlooks the river and has a good view of the valley.
There are spots that can be slippery since it is built on the rock and if it is raining it can be treacherous. Not a easy walk if you have disabilities with walking.

Open to the public, able to see how life was as the castle evolved. Guides were knowledgable and proud of the site. Some steps were steep in areas and difficult to negotiate. View of the area from the castle was impressive.

The Marksburg castle is not for everyone if you have mobility issues then don't try it.
Long walk from the car & bus's parking to the castle, but once inside uneven ground & steps. The view from the top of the castle is spectacular you can see for miles and it would give the Gunner and there Cannons plenty of time to get ready. This medieval castle overlooks the Rhine river, built in the 13 the century was not bomb in the 2 WW & is all original. The armory & weaponay is impressive along with the kitchen & blacksmith areas.

Mooi, nog echt oud, kasteel. Jammer dat de bezichtiging alleen als rondleiding kan. De rondleiding duurt 1 uur en soms sta je erg dicht op elkaar of moet je lang wachten tot de groep weer compleet is.

Auch mit Kindern sehr zu empfehlen! Spannend, nicht zu lang und viel zu erkunden. Wie würden jederzeit wieder kommen. Es gibt auch spezielle Führungen für Kinder. Diese finden jedoch nur an bestimmten Terminen statt. Wir haben an einer regulären Führung teilgenommen und waren sehr zufrieden.

Of all of the castles we saw and visited on our holiday, this was by far the best. Never had it been under attack, which means nothing was destroyed and rebuilt. Everything was original. Even the cobblestone entry, including its centuries of wear and tear (wear and tear is an understatement). If you have balance problems, do not go. Difficultly level: medium. This was an included (free) shore tour with our 15 day Viking River Cruise. Well worth the visit.

I have a choice of seeing Marksburg Castle or ehrenbreitstein Fortress on my Viking River Cruise. Which is more noteworthy?

The Marksburg Castle tour is very tough. It is a about 1/2 to 3/4 mile climb from the bus up several switchbacks. Then when you are on the tour inside the castle, there are a lot of big rough coblestones, inclines and stairs. We went on this tour and it was very tough on my wife. It will be the hardest walking tour on your cruise. We had some friends traveling with us and they went to the Ehrenbreistein Fortress because the husband has trouble walking and uses a cane. Hope this helps.

Take Highway 3 south out of Cologne. Then 48 to 42. Will take about an hour and a half. You might want to check their website for their opening times.

I'd like to take the train from Frankfurt and I find that to get to Marksburg I need to get off the train in Spay. Its on the opposite side of the Rhine and Im wondering if there is a ferry? How do I get across to Braubach?

Take the train from Frankfort to Braubach - they have their own train station. There are several direct route options daily - its a 2 hour train ride. From the train station in Braubach its a 30 minute walk up to Marksburg Castle. We did this a few months ago.
Visit raileurope website and put in your journey from Frankfort to Braubach to see options.

Are there railings on the steps and inclines going up and down to Marksburg? I'm just as concerned about going down...that's usually where I have more of a problem.

It’s not really an easy place for those who are unsteady on their feet as the inclines in the castle are uneven and there are lots of cobbles. The steps up from the car park are pretty steep and hard for the unfit although there are railings and you can take your time. Coming down is ok but the steps descend through trees and woodland so can get slippery.

Hi. About Marksburg Castle, there is a shuttle that takes you most of the way. We did not stay behind as we have no problems walking, but I cautioned those who may. After getting off the shuttle, There are then about 90 stairs to climb to get to bottom of the Castle. After that a walking tour ascends upward along passages once used by knights on horses. I think I posted a picture of the rock walkway. Very old and rutted. If you can just go slow, you probably can do it. One lady on our tour got personal walking tours due to limited mobility. Talk to your ship’s concierge. They may work something out.

Thank you everyone for taking time to respond! The staff from Marksburg Castle also responded by email to say that the only transportation to the castle is by taxi--no bus or tram.
I am wanted to make sure that the castle is open on Mondays? Thank you.
