The guide from the museum accompanied me and explained a few things about this very important historical site. Good leaflet in English as well.
It really is a remarkable and sensitive restoration - a really aesthetically designed tribute to the ancient inhabitants of the Gorenska region,many of whom were plague victims.
A place perhaps to contemplate what we all, rich or poor eventually have to face.

Having never seen an ossuary, I was interested to see this, the key was held in museum next door. The lady very kindly let us in and gave us a great tour. Also see the foundations of an earlier chapel on site

Bones and bones and skulls

I'm convinced that this is not the best attraction of Kranj. They have far better architecture, museums, lively town. They can leave the dead to rest in peace. Ossuary is near the arish churc in the central part of the city.

Kind of eerie place with all those bones and skuls. I didn't know we have one of those in Kranj. Interesting if you are fascinated by those sort of thing. Well kept colection.

Bones!

Lots of bones and skulls which were piled up here hundreds of years ago displayed in a huge pile behind a glass wall. Go next door to the museum to ask for it to be opened - it has the same hours. There are also some walls from the old church visible when you descend the steps. It will only take around five minutes to see, and it's well worth it provided you don't mind bones. Free on the first Sunday of the month.

When we came, it was closed, so we could just sneak around. It is well marked, near church, actually at the left side, closed by glass doors. Even if it was closed, we could read a history of it and see a little part from the street.

Stumbled upon the site on our first night and resolved to visit. Got the key from the Museum & the lovely Uni student thought I'll join you & give us the full tour !! She was great , a volunteer as part of her studies and also walked us thru the Museum after till a large group dragged her away. The whole setting is tastefully done, a little bit confronting when you see just how many deceased are in there but the History behind it is pretty cool. During redevelopment it was decided to preserve these long lost souls and treat them with the respect we all deserve , a very fascinating site !

It's always kind of unpleasant to look at human bones and skulls but at the same time it has some eerie appeal and history behind it. Place is located next to the St. Kancijan church but you can access it by appointment at the Gorenjski Museum (Town Hall) down the street. Ossuary lays under the ground where once stood small chapel which ground plan is marked with glass tiles on the ground level. Selected bones and skulls of more then thousand found skeletons are presented behind a display window. Brief history of found archeological diggings are explained on location. Worth visit.
