We went on a overnight trip to the sanctuary with Soe Moe. We read raving reviews before we left, so maybe expected too much.. we drove to Bogale ourselves and when we arrived he was telling us all about how he was the only one who could handle the authorities as he had been there over 200 times.. and then it took him over an hour to get us cleared.. the boat was noisy but the driver fine. Freda is basic with uncomfortable mattresses. The food was very tasty at every meal and the local staff ( family) very friendly! We went on a late night safari and saw 2 larger crocodiles from afar and some baby crocs up close. The ranger and his spotting abilities in the dark were amazing! The next morning we had a nice breakfast and the morning safari was our ride back to bogale through the sanctuary. We didn’t see any crocs and only 1 kingfisher. Soe Moe seemed to be occupied with his phone the whole way back instead of spotting ( and as he was not communicating with the boatdriver I don’t think he was on Google Maps) and he didn’t seem interested to tell us more about the region and it’s inhabitants. At the end he suggested we had to come back for a 3 nighttrip as this was too short..
We paid 400 USD for this trip( 2pax).

Loved it! I definitely felt like I was in a TV show all weekend.
Soe Moe picked us up a Friday afternoon and drove us to Bogale (from Yangon - 4 hours) where we had a wonderful traditional Myanmar meal at a private boarding school and then got the rare experience to read a story in English to the students and give some tips and/or motivation for them to learn English.
The next morning, we walked around Bogale before taking a beautiful (4 hour) boat ride to and around the sanctuary. We saw a snake and lots of birds on our first day there. In the evening, we enjoyed a gorgeous sunset, and errie moon rise, and stars as we searched for crocodiles in the dark. We found lots of baby crocs, and our wildlife guide even caught one for us to look at up close! I definitely felt like I was in some sort of TV show. We continued on, spotting little crocs here and there, and then, we got very lucky... We spotted a baby leopard cat in a tree! It was so neat! It was a great night! Then as we ate dinner, Soe Moe shared with us a great video clip from the History channel that was made there, so we learned about one of the largest, oldest crocodiles in the area. His name is White Nose.
The next morning, we were in for a treat with a gorgeous sun rise and beautiful weather as we headed out. The first thing we did was talk to some locals, who told us White Nose was near. We waited patiently, and then, he appeared. It was so cool to see the show last night and now to see him in real life! It was amazing!
We went out a few more times and saw more birds, sea otter tracks, monkeys, and lots of different little critters like crabs, mud skippers, and fish.
Overall, it was a really great way to spend a 3 day weekend! If you love nature and being one of the only people in a very private location away from technology and the world, this is the place to go!

Any nature enthusiast looking to view wildlife and Myanmar must make this trip. We booked our trip with Soe Moe as a 3 day weekend getaway from Yangon. It was a perfect experience for us and just the right amount of time.
We were picked up in the late afternoon from Yangon and arrived in Bogale after about 4 and a half hours on the road. We arrived to be treated to a meal by a local private boarding school. There we got to have an interactive experience with the teachers and students of that school.
In the morning we took the boat from Bogale to Mein Ma Hla Kyun. On the way to our base camp we took the scenic ride through the island to begin wildlife viewing.
We arrived to Freda and were treated to lunch. They provided all of our meals during the time we stayed there and they were all delicious. The rooms are pretty bare bones for accommodation. The beds are not super comfortable and there is no air conditioning. You will have to shower by pouring buckets of water on yourself like the locals would. I would recommend bringing a battery powered fan, possibly additional bedding, some entertainment for when you are at Freda, and your passport, as you will need to get your visa and passport copied to get into the sanctuary.
We went during rainy season and had some good luck and did not have too much rain during our visit. Though when it rained it felt nice and did not bother us. The recommended time to visit was January and February.
Soe Moe was an incredibly knowledgeable guide who was great to travel around with. We could ask him about anything. He even showed us the tv show that was filmed on this island and told us the inside scoop of what really happened.
We really enjoyed every part of this vacation and would highly recommend it if you are looking to get away from Yangon for a nice weekend.

Staying in the wildlife sactuary was like rebooting - being on the boat all day waiting to see crocodiles, dolphins and birds was very relaxing. The base was simple but with everything that we needed.
Nice hosts, nice guide who took care of all administrative stuff beforehands, picked us up in Yangon and took us back to Yangon bus station.

This tour was the best! Ive spent some time with saltwater crocs in Australia, on one of the nights we saw a monster that was bigger than they get in the NT! An actual dinosaur.
Richard, Soe Moe’s uncle came on this trip with us. He had travelled many countries in the world and spoke literally perfect English. He was so great we learnt heaps from him from Myanmar’s history, including life advice he learnt from monks.
Soe Moe was cool, he is truly helping the earth trying to conserve and protect the wildlife and is really passionate about it. Jeremy, who worked for Soe Moe was also super helpful and kind and translated a few things in English for us.
The highlight was actually going to a school on our way through. The kids there had never met foreigners and they cooked us a massive banquet, they were so happy and excited it was such an amazing cultural experience.
We also went to a fisherman village basically untouched by western culture and had no access for cars so was like going back in time to see the real culture.
Do it!

We had an amazing 4 day trip with Soe Moe out in the Myanmar jungle mangroves. We were very lucky and saw a huge crocodile on our first night! We loved the trip - the accommodation was clean and tidy and we were fed so much food while we were there! We visited a local school on the way there and back - the kids and staff were so friendly and kind. Soe Moe and the guide were very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and routes around the mangroves, as well as wildlife conservation in Myanmar. We visited a local mangrove plantation for re-forestation, as well as the local fish markets early one morning which were both really interesting. All the staff took great care of us and we’re very happy. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to get off the beaten track and have an authentic Myanman experience!

Soe Mo and the ranger were awesome tour guides, very knowledgeable, low key, kind. Highlights were seeing some massive crocs, and laying on the top of the boat star gazing in the middle of the night. Highly recommend

We stayed there only one night however the trip was amazing . We contacted forestry department and they arranged boat with drivers. We left our car at their office. The drivers may not be as good as a guide and cannot speak English ( we read many things about the area and I’m Burmese so it was fine.) but they know the area very well and the boat driver is very good at searching crocodiles that other boats couldn’t see. We found small crocodiles at night and a big 16 ft crocodile in the morning( missed to take the photo). We were not lucky to see the dolphins though. The trip is a little pricey according to other reviews. We paid fairly reasonable for two people ( one foreigner and one Burmese) for everything.Freda base camp is a clean place to stay and the family , especially the man, is very humble and nice. And they cooked ‘delicious ‘ Burmese meals for the guests.its very relaxing to go around the island seeing different kinds of birds, monkeys, butterflies, mangroves, cats. And watching sunset and sunrise are unforgettable.

I guess you could take a boat from Bogale, there is only one guesthouse ‘Freda’ I am not sure if you can just show up and I am not sure if you can arrange the permit to go there yourself, it might take some time and hassle. In the reviews there is the name and number of a guide who can arrange it for you, but I found it really expensive!

Cómo podemos tomar contacto con Sœur amor Aung para un viaje al Santuario ?

Dear Soe Moe,
Would you say it is possible and worth it (not too short) to come to the reserve just spending two nights there (leaving on the 21st of october from yangoon, staying the 21st and 22nd nights at the FREDA guesthouse and going back to yangoon on the 23nd (leaving around midday)?
How much will this cost for two adults and a five year old child? Thanks a lot for your answer. Best wishes
