I went to this museum because it was close to my hotel. It isn't big, so it will take no time to complete your tour of the art. Religion is the focus of the art. I enjoyed the mixture of paintings and sculptures. Worth a see if you're in the area.

We went to this place first and got tickets for three museums. This one, the Carlos Machado Museu,Nucleo de Arte Sacra, the Carlos Machado Museu Nucleo de Santa Andre, and a Museu of the works of Canto da Maya. (Some of these places seem to have more than one name., but there are three venues.) There was a discount for getting tickets to all three. A ticket to the Nucleo de Arte Sacra also gets you into the Igreja de Colegio (formerly belonging to the Jesuit order). We are from New England so we found exhibits relating to the Portuguese in New England to be of great interest. It seems that 80% of the Portuguese in New England have their roots in the Azores. I knew the percentage was high but I did not realize it was that high. There are photos and displays showing things occurring in New England and relating them to the Azores. (We stopped at one of the Miradors on the western end of Sao Miiguel between Provoçao and Nordeste. There was a sign point to important world cities -- one was to Fall River, Massachusetts. By the way I had my first Super Bock in Fall River.) The Igreja do Colegio and its history are interesting too and worth a stop even if other things don't interest you. This is a museum that is that not too large; you can see it all or do only the things that interest you without guilt, I recommend a visit. The amount of time one takes can vary widely.

Pedro showed us around he is great tells you all the history with funny stories included. Museum is just open but well worth a visit.

Além da Igreja não tem muitas exposições, alguns items religiosos apenas, mas a Igreja vale mesmo a pena e é a mais bonita na ilha.

Die sakrale Kunst des Inselmuseums ist in der Jesuitenkirche Igreja do Colegio de Todos os Santos untergebracht, einem prächtigen Barockbau. Von der ersten Kirche an dieser Stelle blieb nichts erhalten. Die mit geschwungenen Giebeln verzierte Front aus grauem Vulkangestein gilt als eine der schönsten Fassaden der Azoren. Leider war bei meinem Besuch das Museum/die Kirche geschlossen (Mittagspause)

Jouxte et communique avec l'église du collège des Jésuites. On trouve à l'entrée un tableau du peintre azorien Domingos Rebelo (1891-1975), "Viatique" (1919) et dont le style rappelle celui du peintre espagnol Joaquin Sorolla. On peut aussi observer des tableaux du XVIe s et une partie d'un retable ("Jésus et Pierre").

This is a pretty small museum with some sacred artifacts and a small exhibit upstairs. The Incredibly ornate altar in the church carved from wood is amazing. There were also some carved ivory figurines that blew me away. You can get a ticket for all three museums for 5 Euro.
