We were staying in a summerhouse, between the towns of Hou and Hals, for about a two week period. This area which is situated in Nordjylland, has access to some lovely beaches and to many historic buildings. There are good facilities in both towns, grocery stores, etc., with maybe, Hals having the most complete services. You can approach this area, either through Aalborg or by a ferry crossing Limfjorden at Hals.
We had a lot of time to relax and also lots of time to spend exploring. We have always enjoyed visiting the many churches that dot the Danish countryside, and as said, this area has quite a few old and interesting ones. Dronninglund certainly falls into this category. It was built between 1160-1200, originally as a monastery church for the Hundslund Nunnery, who were part of the Benedictine Order. The church contains Denmark's oldest depiction of a windmill in a fresco, dated 1513-1523. The interior of the church also contains some amazing frescoes. The church is a part of what is now the Dronninglund Castle, which dates back to the 12th century, when it was the Benedictine Monastery. After the nuns left in 1581, it was owned by the Lindenow family and acquired by Queen Charlotte Amalie in 1690. Hence, the name Dronninglund, queen grove. The castle's present owners now operate the complex as a hotel/restaurant/conference facility.
Some of the other notable churches in the area are Voer Kirke, some very beautiful paintings and carvings, Hou Kirke, and Melholt Kirke, to name a few.
Denmark is the home of beautiful beaches, one that we especially enjoyed spending time at was Bisnap. This gently sloping, white sandy beach stretches for about 6 kilometres. Its sandy dunes offer seclusion for those who wish to have a little privacy in their worship of the sun.
If you're itching for things to do a bit further afield, a visit to Aalborg or a ferry trip to Laeso are easy day trip options. Aalborg has things to see such as Budolfi Kirke, or, across the fjord, Lindholm Hoje. A trip to Laeso will require a longer days commitment, but it is doable. It is about a 45 minute drive north to Fredrikshavn and then about a 1 hour 40 minute ferry ride to the island. It has some interesting history worthwhile learning about, i.e. the half timbered, eelgrass thatched houses.
This is a very nice part of Denmark, the problem is, maybe two weeks are not enough!

Kirken har flot trædkærerarbejde og mange kalkmalerier. Kirkegården er ualmindelig velpasset og fin til en gåtur.

Brug gerne tid på denne smukke gamle kirke med mange fremragende kalkmalerier. Ligeledes et meget smukt farvestrålende kors i forgangen samt ikke mindst et kors fremstillet i sterlingsølv og celleemaille af guldsmed Bent Exner (hænger i en glasmontre på væggen i kirken)

Vi besøgte Dronninglund Kirke (slotskirke) og den er absolut et besøg værd. Alt er super velholdt. 3 konservatorer arbejdede i kirken og fortalte gerne om deres arbejde.

Denne kirke er nærmest en integreret del af slottet, men alligevel en selvstændig enhed. Den har nogle meget flotte kalkmalerier, men er ellers en ret enkel kirke. Altertavlen er dog meget flot, og kirkebænkene er også smukt dekoreret. De gamle tryk udstillet i forhallen er også interessante at studere. Et besøg værd.

Vacker kyrka helt i anslutning till Dronninglund slott. Ursprungligen byggdes kyrkan för drygt 800 år sedan. Kyrkans inventarier härrör mestadels från början av 1700-talet då en prinsessa bodde på slottet. Det finns fina kalkmålningar.

En fantastisk flot gammel kirke som er beliggende ved Dronninglund Slot, dejlig bevaret inden i med de flotte gamle ting, fantastisk lyd forhold, selv dårligt hørende får fuld udbytte af hele gudstjenesten.
