A mainly shingle beach, unless the tide is out, it doesn’t have many things going for it, but one one thing it does tend to have is space. It’s not easily accessible by car and there’s hardly any parking anyway, only one concrete toilet block and one cafe.
But the upshot is not many people. It is mainly utilised by those holidaying in Winchelsea Sands and Winchelsea beach park, and the local dog walkers and body board surfers who know what time to go and what time to park.
For walkers there are three options, the beach itself, the sea wall, or the footpath below the sea wall that goes all the way to Rye Harbour nature reserve. The sea wall gives the best views but can be bracing when the wind is up, which is often.

Good beach and dog friendly east of the toilet block. Very few facilities, but this means uncrowded, so we could therefore throw the ball with the dogs and play games as a family, although can be especially windy and we spent a lot of time chasing the football. Only the disabled toilets were unlocked in the toilet block and this needed someone to hold shut as the fastening was miss aligned.

So once you got past all the stones/pebbles the beach was lovely but we went with a trolley full of kids stuff and chairs which on the way back up was near impossible!!

This a nice beach, free to park along the road and big when the tide is out. I liked that the bottom of the sea comes out to play. It is also good that the stones hold the sand back a bit.

On a mini break to Sussex and Kent we had spent one night in Rye, and now we were moving on, to Hastings.
We decided to take the scenic route along the coast-road to Hastings and this took us adjacent to Winchelsea Beach. The road is very worn in places and rutted; lorries rattle along it at considerable speeds.
We pulled up on a hard-shoulder area in the lee of the coastal bund. We took a short walk along the top of the bund, but it was very breezy and it was too cold for any extended walk, a pity. The most apt term would be ‘Bracing’.
The area of sand/pebbles is really impressive at about 1.5 miles long. With the town of Rye being almost 2 miles directly north, and with the Rye Wetlands to the east this is the nearest seaside location that serves the town of Rye.
The beach itself has no facilities, it is good for a long walk, but you would have to take all you need with you. There is a good café over the bund at the Beach Park.

Due to little parking, lack of facilities, and shingles rather than sand at high tide, Winchelsea Beach never gets too busy and is one of the few remaining areas of south coast that has not been heavily developed. On a sunny summer’s days, if you are lucky, you may even find an ice-cream van.

There is a lot of History with the old town and the new town, a church that is partly in ruins but was it damaged or was it never finished ??

Hi on researching about when the beach is dog friendly due to an upcoming trip (July likely) its prohibited ? Is there anywhere near winchelsea caravan park me and the dog can go? Thanks

I remember 50 years ago I caught a train to Winchelsea Beach station. Not Winchelsea, but winchelsea beach.
Nobody I know thinks it existed, but on a walk along the beach towards Rye, there is evidence that a train track was once there.
Can you confirm this please?

We are coming to your hotel next week. What is the situation regarding Mosquitos please. Do we need to bring spray etc. Thanks. Will the swimming pool be open, I understand it may be unsafe to swim in the ocean. Thank you.

It was early spring (April) when we went to Winchelsea beach. so mosquitos weren't in site. Our hotel, the Strandhotel, have no pool. I'm afraid not to be not a great help answering your questions.
