Hier een zeer interessante rondleiding gehad . De gids vertelt over de geschiedenis van de scheef staande toren en laat je op verschillende etages o.a het orgel en de klokken zien. Er zijn twee rondgangen buiten waar vanuit je een mooi overzicht op de stad hebt en vanuit de bovenste kun je zelfs de westpoint in Tilburg en de stad Utrecht zien.

It took over 50 years to complete the construction of this wonderful gothic style tower. The finishing touch was made in 1517 when the spire was added. Ever since the 67m high tower dominates the city skyline. Note the amazing masonry serving to beautify the appearance of the tower. The adjacent church building is relatively new. It replaced an old structure in the 1850s.
The tower can be climbed on Saturday afternoons (until end of September). Ticketprice 3.50€

Deze grote kerktoren valt vooral op door zijn kromming. Vlak na het begin van de bouw begon hij te verzakken. De bovenste delen zijn daarna weer verticaal op gebouwd. Met als gevolg een kromme toren. Apart om te zien.

De toren valt op door de scheefstand en is een mooi icoon in de oude binnenstad. Ligt in een gezellig gebied rond de Grote Markt

Near the river Merwede lies the city of Gorinchem in the middle of The Netherlands. We visited the church @ the market square and were welcomed by one of the church members. Beside the photo exhibition, you could see the changing room of the vicar and photos of his predecessors. We even discovered the seating row where my parents in law used to have their reserved seats. With coffee offered and available toilets, a nice, free look into this landmark.

Door de uitleg van de stadsgids werd deze toren een bezienswaardigheid. Met name de scheefstand van de toren en van de verschillende torendelen waren opvallend. Het kunstwerk in de toren was erg mooi en had een bijzondere betekenis. Toen wij 's avonds teruggingen om naar het lichteffect te kijken, was dat helaas niet waarneembaar.

The tower is beautiful to admire from the outside. There are times (ask the local tourist office/VVV) that you can climb the tower in a group for a small fee. The tower itself is also open to the public on certain times every week. There is a volunteer that will talk you through the history of the tower and the current use. It is a place of remembrance and meditation if you like. The current use came about after the tragic death of two teenagers in Gorinchem that were accidentally hit by gun shots not meant for them. Three artists were asked to design a piece of art for the tower in memory of the tragic event. The winning artist has a lot of symbolism in here light thread art. Admire and perhaps leave a message in on of the tubes. During the day the light threads bring light from outside in. During the night the light threads bring light inside out. Worth a visit, but pay attention to the opening times. Interestingly the tower looks part of the church that is attached to it, but it is not. The arch on the inside of the tower that seems to lead into the building of the church, does not, it is totally cemented shut. On closer inspection it is visible that the building style of the tower and the church have nothing in common. They were built in different eras. The tower was once part of an older church that was destroyed (burnt) decades earlier. The newer church was just built against the old tower, but is not part of it. The tower is governed by the town of Gorinchem. The church is governed by the churcy society.
