Gorinchem was in de 16/17e eeuw een vestingstad in de Hollandse Waterlinie, nog steeds als zodanig herkenbaar. In de stadsomwalling waren 5 poorten, waarvan deze op de weg naar het gehucht Dalem langs de Merwede, de enig overgeblevene is (hoewel restanten van de Waterpoort in de tuin van het Rijksmuseum staan). Je kunt er doorheen wandelen richting de uiterwaarden. Naast de poort een bronzen beeld van een zalmvisser.

A small group had the pleasure to walk through Gorinchem, which had so much history and culture and beauty. This area was like stepping back a few centuries in time. And a lovely port view.

One of the four gates that once served entry into the heavily fortified city of Gorinchem. A solid structure built in 1597 on the east side of the center. The gate can easily be reached on foot and you can continue your walk towards the Merwede river for good views towards the south and the city
