Macau is full of small, pleasant gardens. This lush space is another reminder of the city's Portuguese legacy. Surrounding the statue of Vasco da Gama is an open area for local residents. Sitting at one of its benches is like as if time never flies.

For our 40th wedding anniversary my wife and I enjoyed an 18 day Asian tour from 28 December 2019 to 14 January 2020 taking in short stays in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Laos and Singapore.
For the Macau segment of our tour we decided that instead of taking the popular option of a day trip from Hong Kong we would have a stay of two nights. We wanted to experience a bit more of the real Macau and as it turned out we could easily have enjoyed at least a week in this wonderful place. We chose to stay at the Hotel Royal (reviewed separately) on Estrada da Vitória in the Macau parish of São Lázaro. How convenient that directly in front of the Hotel Royal was the beautifully landscaped Jardim de Vasco da Gama (Vasco da Gama Garden) as an added extra.
We enjoyed several pleasant walks through Jardim de Vasco da Gama from Rua de Ferreira do Amaral when getting back to our hotel after our daily travels. These walks enabled us to admire the beautifully manicured landscaped gardens created in the 19th century and the bust of Vasco da Gama, the work of sculptor Tomás da Costa erected in 1911. The bust sits on an imposing stone pillar or plinth placed above a pleasing three layered octagonal water fountain. Looking up and admiring this bust reminded me of the valuable place in world history that is reserved for Vasco da Gama as the first to sail from Europe to India by rounding Africa's Cape of Good Hope in 1498. How wonderful then that Macau has chosen to honour this brave pioneering Portuguese navigator by providing such a beautiful, simple Garden.
There is pleasing symmetry in this Garden. Surrounding the plinth with the bust of Vasco da Gama are four equal sized concave truncated square green and purple shrub gardens with pretty pink flower borders, as a break from the impressive paving tiles throughout the Garden. The purple shrubs create a pleasing pattern amongst the greenery. The concave truncations create a circular path around the stone plinth and water fountain with entrances to this path at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions of the created circle. We had a wonderful view of the overall effect of this horticultural artistry from a good vantage point at the top of the 14 steps down to the Garden on Estrada da Vitória. The multi storey Hotel Royal provided the ideal backdrop for these Gardens. We also enjoyed good views of the Gardens from the breakfast restaurant at this Hotel. For travellers with children there is a very good children’s playground with good recreational facilities to the side of the Garden.
The Gardens also looked lovely at night time with the large spherical Christmas lights (we were there on 31 December) lit up around the Vasco da Gama fountain and plinth providing a splendid sight.
As an aside, if travellers happen to be visiting this Garden around a meal time and are looking for a great place to eat, we would recommend the Windsor Arch Seafood Restaurant which is just about diagonally opposite Jardim de Vasco da Gama in Rua de Henrique de Macedo. The exterior looks very lack lustre and rather uninviting but the restaurant inside is nicely appointed. We had lunch here and nobody could speak English and we were the only westerners in the place. However, with sign language and pointing to an all Chinese written menu with food images, we received a really well cooked set menu of western favourite Chinese dishes. It was as good a lunch as any we experienced on our 18 day trip and it was a real surprise packet for us. It demonstrated that indeed “you can’t always tell a book by its cover”.
However, I digress, so back to the Vasco da Gama Gardens to complete my review. This may only be a small city public garden, but it certainly is not insignificant. It represents a beautiful oasis in a very busy city environment and it is a place where time can stand still for just a moment while passers- by admire its obvious impressive features. In a modern world where buildings tend to dominate, it is so pleasing and refreshing to see dotted here and there pockets of parkland like the Jardim de Vasco da Gama that really add so much value to the local city environment.

高層ビルから見下ろされるような位置関係でもありましたが、普段は静かな公園となっていました。
中央部には、噴水を兼ねたヴァスコ・ダ・ガマ胸像が立ち、園名を表すポイントとなっていました。又、一角には花壇もあり、市内中心部のオアシスと云えそうでした。

ギア要塞から、セナド広場に向かう途中に、この公園の前を通りました。
以前に、向かいのロイヤル ホテルに宿泊した事があるので、４年ぶりに来ました。大きな公園で、子供用の遊具施設もあります。地元の、お年寄りがベンチでお喋りしていました。

Full of people doing Pilate's or other firms of exercise in the morning. Through to group dancing in the evening. Well maintained and with a lovely central fountain

Jardim de Vasco da Gama is a small city garden and square located along Rua de Ferreira do Amaral. It is situated between the Historic Centre of Macau and Guia Hill. It is a good stopping point for those wanting a quick rest before walking up to to see the World Heritage Guia Fort.
Here you find park benches places around a centre monument and bust of Portuguese Navigator Vasco de Gama which was erected here in 1911. There is a small children's playground area as well as nicely landscaped scrubs and flowerbeds that help create an urban escape from the busy streets of Macau.

東望洋酒店へ行く途中にあった公園で、ロイヤルホテルとアリーナの前にあります。
公園の中央には何故かヴァスコ・ダ・ガマの胸像があります。この辺は樹々が無いので暑い日中は誰もいません。木陰のあるほうは子供の遊具があり、こちらはファミリーで賑わっていました。東面に歴史がありそうな建物がありました。
