St James's Church is located near the Buttermere Lake, in Lakes District National Park, in the North of England. It is a tiny church, which was built in the middle of the 19th Century, where before there was another small church. We saw it from outside and it is nice. A photo of the church and surroundings (lake and mountains) is beautiful.

We went to Buttermere Lake to walk around it. Next to the wasteland where we parked alongside the road there is this tiny church on an incline on the edge of the village which is very interesting. I have never seen such a small church. It has a metal gate on the porch to keep the sheep out!

This church/chapel is just outside Buttermere but worth the short 10-min walk to see. Most interesting is the plaque for Alfred Wainright whose ashes were scattered on the mountain across the lake from the chapel.

Me and my husband started our walk from this gorgeous little church right next to Robinson path and loved that there were Herrick sheep roaming free

Lovely small church which I guess only holds approximately 40-50 people. sensational views and a car park close by. Beautiful historical features.

St James Church in Buttermere is just up the hill from the village centre. Constructed in 1840 it has no real historic significance and, being a typically small country church, there are no great treasures to discover. It has great charm however as well as a couple of interesting features.
One of the most notable features greets you immediately on arrival, and that is the splendid Shepherd’s Gate, which is an iron gate depicting the shepherd, a ewe and a lamb - all heading up a steep slope. This is evocative of everyday life in the area and the symbolic “shepherd and his flock” clearly has the relevant religious connotation.
The other famous thing here is the memorial to Alfred Wainwright, which is to be found on the southwest window ledge, where it was thoughtfully positioned as the window in question looks out Haystacks, his favourite spot.

You'll need a car unless you're on a tourbus but I doubt a tour buss would stop here. It's so lovely. I went at the end of April. Sheep and daffodils everywhere. It's beautifully old and amazing that it's still in use as a church!

Not common to have to keep sheep out of the church. Make sure you see the memorial to Alfred Wainwright inside below the view he loved.

I took time out to pay a short visit to this delightful small church when staying overnight nearby in Buttermere. Unfortunately I was unable to gain access but it was still worth the short walk to see the wrought iron gates in the porch way.
