Joshin was a wonderful guide on our backwater bike tour. The bikes were good, the roads flat with few vehicles. The two hour 12 km trip was perfect.

We got to know about this place through a Google search and I was initially a little vary as well since one cannot solely rely on websites but I am so glad we did this. It was an unique experience and curated per our needs. Personal attention was given by Rishi who was so patient with my family especially my 8 year old daughter. We are able to not just get trained during our first session but we also managed to paddle around on our own under his supervision. I would recommend this to everyone even if they don't know how to swim. Getting there was easy as well. There is a clean and neat changing area and excellent branded and safe equipment. Look forward to doing this again soon. Thank you!

A must visit if you are looking for something else than houseboat.
The guide goes with you on the trip and also let you know about the wildlife you see there.

Plunge adventures all start from Johnny Moose Farms, about 30 minutes from Kumarakom by Auto (tuk tuk). Rish advised me to do a cycle trip instead of kayaking due to the high water levels and I was happy I ventured out of my comfort zone. I am reasonably fit but clueless about mountain bikes. Rish was very patient in explaining everything to me and I learned about how to ride in various terrains. The bikes were very good for the country roads. My butt less so. Still the beautiful scenery and great conversations were worth it.
Rish took me first to a nearby temple which is one of the oldest in the area. I had visited many hindu temples on my journey but never quite knew what was what so it was very enlightening to have someone explain things. This temple’s main deity is Shiva and there is water being constantly poured over him (to cool off his temper!) but worshippers must not step over the water channel that flows from it to the outside of the temple. So no one makes a full circle around the inner shrine. Who would have known! I’m so glad I did not offend people.
Then we made our way to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary through the villages and paddy fields. The rice was in various stages of harvest, and there were flocks of birds flying all around. I marvelled how abundant birds were. White herons against a green field is such a beautiful image. We chatted about everything on the journey, from the way the farms were divided by the Kerala communist government to how they are farmed in cooperatives.
We probably got to the Bird Sanctuary by 9am. And before 11am was the time when one can see the maximum number of birds. I had thought one had to go at 6:30am when it opens but we encountered quite a large variety so I don’t think it’s necessary to go so early. The second watch tower was the best location as we managed to see quite a few big birds such as the painted stork nesting in the far way trees. Rish’s super binoculars were very handy for examining them from far away. These were gorgeous giants with a huge wing span and pink tail. I’d never expected to see such a large bird here. Smaller birds are harder to spot but Rish knows their chirps so well that he is able to find them easily and point them out to me. I could never have seen so many different varieties had I gone alone. No wonder the bird sanctuary reviews are full of people who said they didn’t see any birds!
On the way back we went a different route and saw farmers harvesting rice, transporting it down the canals on canoes. Rish left me at a Toddy restaurant which is in the middle of the paddy fields. I tasted the most delicious food of my trip so far. The duck curry was out of this world. Tapioca mash was a welcome change from the usual appams and chapatis. I also had a local black pearl fish which is from the local Vembanad lake grilled in a banana leaf and seasoned with tomatoes and cashew nuts.
This was the most authentic experience I’ve had on my trip. I think it’s so important to get off the beaten track and talk in depth with local people. It’s far more rewarding than doing what everyone else does like a herd of sheep. Rish’s passion for nature and his hometown is very inspiring and I feel I’ve made a local friend.

We were 5 ( Wife, kid, myself and in in-laws) and I was a little skeptical about doing this. But after meeting our guide Riche, who did explain about the safety measures and do and don'ts,We went for it and we are so glad we did this together. This is a perfect example for Eco-Tourism / responsible tourism.
This is a Must do for any one who is planning to experience the backwaters. Next time its going to be Stand-up Paddling :D
Thanks a lot Riche!!! Respect _/\_

We are a family of four(two children aged 6&9)and we booked the 4 pm kayak tour after reading the amazing reviews and were not disappointed. We did the 8km loop and went through beautiful canals surrounded by nature and small villages. Rish our guide was very informative and we spoke about the different bird species in the area, plants, culture, food, history and a lot more. Truly a memorable trip!!

A lovely way to see the backwaters, navigating the channels in a kayak. Joshin was a great guide, pointing out many things of interest. Highly enjoyable way to spend a morning, and it was good to do it when the day was still cool and not unbearably hot.

Joshin was true to his word. When I asked for it to be a solo trip, just me and a guide so that I don’t get lost, that’s exactly what he delivered. He and I set out in the kayak, a journey through the most beautiful backwaters of Kerala. We set out at 4 to miss the heat of the day. We were kayaking at sundown. It was wowzer amazing.
After about an hour and a half we had thunder lightning and rain, Shakespearian drama in literal terms. We moved to the side of the canal, but only when lightning got close to us. It is quite safe to be there during lightning storms. Just a few basic rules.
When the rain came, the rain really came. It was incredible. The day went from bright and sunny to dark clouds. The thunder started to roll. And then the lightning started flashing. It was amazing to be out there on the water in the middle of a storm. The rain moved on and it brightened up again for sunset.
We saw so many birds, bats, trees, flowers, churches, temples, village life and loads of gorgeous kids. Because it’s off the main tourist thoroughfare, everyone is pleased to see you and say ‘hi’. Not like the Kerala you see from the houseboats. Chalk and cheese. This is just real life on the backwaters - slowly ticking along. The farming and fishing. Joshin was amazing actually. He know his wildlife and is used to spotting things.
It was so amazing I booked cycling the next day. Equally awesome, speechless 😶.
He has an amazing home stay cottage too at the farm. Available to rent. Birdwatchers paradise. It sits on the lake. It’s the only property on the lake. It really is an incredible location. It’s done up beautifully inside. Five star Kerala homestay. With bikes and kayaks on site more could you want?
I’m travelling around India alone, and it’s certainly one of the highlights. It was truly amazing.

My friend and I heard about this kayaking tour and decided to give it a try, despite never having been in a kayak before. We were taught the basics of paddling, which was easier than we expected, and then we were off. The view was stunning, the host Rish gave us interesting insight into the flora and fauna, the history and the characteristics of the place, and especially helped us spot so many beautiful blue kingfishers.
We absolutely loved this experience and are so glad we didn’t miss it. Highly recommend it to everyone!

We did a 8-km kayaking stretch along with out 9 year old son. The guide was very calm, patient, and knowledgeable, and helped us spot many birds (flying foxes, kingfishers), weaver bid nests and water snakes.
Few practical bits - It is around 50 minutes from the Kumarakom bird sanctuary, with limited access to local transport, so you've got to sort it out. But you would not regret it for sure - completely worth it.
