This War Cemetery is a bit unusual and a little different from other war cemeteries. There are communal graves of German soldiers as well as a number of individual graves. In stark contrast to other nations' cemeteries which have white or grey gravestones and crosses, in this cemetery there are black or dark stones and crosses. There obviously was a lot of resentment after the war about the burial of German soldiers on French soil. Nevertheless it is worth remembering that all soldiers are really the same and should be regarded with equal respect.

Cementerio aleman, en el que estuvo la tumbra del aviador aleman conocido como "Baron Rojo". Como todos, digno de visitar y asi recordar un poco de lo que por estos lugares paso hace 100 años.
Perfectamente mantenido, y con las cruces "tipo" de hierro que se encuentran en la mayoria de los cementerios alemanes.

Un des plus grands cimetières allemands situé en France. Plus de 17000 combattants y sont inhumés. Les croix de fer noires sont assez en contraste avec les stèles blanches des cimetières britanniques et les croix blanches des cimetières français.
Un panneau intéressant à l'entrée indique la présence temporaire dans ce cimetière du corps de l'as allemand Manfred Von Richtoffen, alias le Baron Rouge, rapatrié depuis à Berlin.

Ce cimetière allemand, comme tous les autres, est froid. Il y a une atmosphère pesante qui rend le lieu unique. Un lieu de mémoire très discret où la mémoire se lie avec l'histoire. A visiter

I visited last week and spent maybe 30 mins on site, i was surprised but the sheer volume of burials on site and the fact that we had the place to ourselves, well kept and though provoking visit, east parking

A rare German cemetery, which once contained the body of Baron Manfred von Richtofen (he eventually was returned to Germany for burial). The number of crosses signify 4 soldiers buried at each one, but the largest number are buried in what appear to be 3 mass graves at the head of the cemetery. More poignantly, are the number of German Jewish soldiers buried there - not many, but nevertheless ... only 20 years before ‘Kristallnacht’ and the start of the pogrom against all Jews throughout Germany.

Having been to a German Cemetery before I wasn't shocked with what we found. In fairness the Germans don't celebrate their fallen as other nations. The men don't have their own graves and it's no different here, 4 to a plot or in a mass grave. Its such a shame as they fell in believing they were supporting their country. Very Humble experience.

Ein Ort der Trauer und Erinnerung an die gefallenen Deutschen Soldaten im 1.WK. Hier liegen über 17000 Soldaten begraben. Lange war dort auch die Ruhestätte von Manfred von Richthofen.

Please visit this and realize that young people died on both sides in this conflict and that should be taken into account. It’s interesting to see the difference between the grave stones and cemeteries.

As I understand it there was some resentment after the war on the part of the French (clvilian administration) about giving up land to German cemeteries. This meant that burial were concentrated (moved to one location) and mass graves became necessary. Having previously visited the Flanders German Cemetery at Langemarck near Ypres, we went to Fricourt on the Somme as part of this trip. Although there are many crosses with 4 men to a grave, the four mass graves are most moving. More than 17,000 men are buried here with more than 6,000 unidentified, such was the gruesome nature of shellfire in this war. A stark contrast to the British and French cemeteries but somehow the German cemeteries are more representative of the horrors the soldiers went through.
