I had previously visited Cabo Pulmo in 2018 when it fully deserved 5 stars. I spent 6 days diving, and visited the top dive sites multiple times and the schooling jacks 3 times.

My return in late November 2021 showed things have changed. The number of dive operators has more than doubled, this means that the prime sites are 'dived out' quicker. When a site has reached the permitted number of divers in a given day/week/4 week period it is closed to all diving for a period. I was present in Cabo Pulmo for 9 days, in that period the shipwreck El Vencedor (where you are most likely to see the bull sharks) was open for one day. To manage the increased number of divers the lesser sites have been subdivided into different sites. This means that you are much less likely to dive on a prime site. Additionally, you will be confined at that less that super site, you won't move more than a little because you would encroach on another dive group.

Havin seen the best of Cabo Pulmo I can say that it can provide exceptional dives, bull sharks, schooling fish, the jack school. However, in Nov 2021 even diving on the best sites was difficult. The growth of operators and diver numbers means that the experience isn't what it was. When you consider that dives may be cancelled if it is too windy (late Nov, Dec and Jan in particular) and visibility isn't guaranteed (at its worst it was 4m in Nov 2021 and averaged about 7m on my dives) you can appreciate that scoring a great cabo pulmo experience is a bit of a lottery, now more than ever.

When you consider that cabo pulmo is remote and the last 6 miles or so are on unmade roads you can't just stop by on a whim. If you really want to see the best sites you'll need decent visibility (Nov,Dec,Jan), but it gets windy in Dec/Jan. You'll need to be present for at least 4 days. I wouldn't prebook my diving as there are plenty of operators looking for customers and the visibility cannot be guaranteed. It can be excellent, but it can be mediocre.

The dive providers will all do their best to ensure you have a great dive, but site access appears outside their ability to easily influence. So in summary don't expect it to be amazing, it probably won't be, but it just might be the best dive you've had in ages.

In a natural preserve, you can see sharks, schools of Jacks among others. Nice diving shops, around 20 of them? Snorkeling options as well.

In one day went to 4 sites. Would snorkel it or dive it again. Saw Eagle Rays, Humpback Whales, many turtles, tons of fish, moray eels, bait balls, live rock and corals, and much, much more.

I think it is a good idea to book two outings in one day to make it a full day, OR stay the night and go out the next day. Long trip, very much worth it.

I was out in the reserve for 3.5 hours. Wished it was 8.

We’re not divers, but we sure found plenty of good snorkeling over three days at this UNESCO marine reserve in mid-May. (The reserve protects “the only living reef in the Sea of Cortez,” and the coves had been overfished until the reserve was established in 1995.) There was no need to wear a wetsuit since the sea was a comfortable 75 degrees. On our first day, we took a snorkel boat tour with the Cabo Pulmo Resort ($80), diving in at three different spots. Our guide swam with us into a school of hundreds of Jack fish. Among the coral fans and kelp, we saw moray eels, clown fish, large parrot fish and a couple of large green turtles.
Over the next few days, we drove the bumpy desert roads to snorkel at three beaches: Los Frailes, Las Barracas and our favorite, Los Arbolitos. It’s about a $5 per car to enter the gate into the marine park at Los Arbolios. While the posted hours were 9 a.m. to 5 p.m (Mondays were closed), note that the gate attendant didn’t get there until 10:30 on the Tuesday we were there. This beach had toilets and shower facilities, and an equipment rental and snack kiosks (that were closed that day for unknown reasons.) With snorkels and fins in hand, we walked past the main beach area along a dirt trail above several rocky coves, before clambering down to begin our snorkeling. Many dive/snorkel tour boats come here, but by mid-afternoon, we had the cove all to ourselves.
We also visited Las Frailes beach later in the day; however, since the water was choppy and the shore was covered with small blue jellyfish (which I had previously been stung by), I just explored the shoreline by foot rather than snorkel.
While there are day trips from Cabo, you may want rent a car to explore here – the desert roads are bumpy and dusty but we did fine with a subcompact, being cautious to avoid any potholes and large ruts. At the main street of Cabo Pulmo, there are lots of dive/snorkel equipment rentals along the main road, with plenty of boat captains waiting to take out divers and snorkelers.

Worth every second and penny! I cant wait to go back. Here are some of the details that would have helped me to plan:
1. If you take Highway 1 from Cabo it is well paved. There is a 5 mile section of dirt road to Cabo Pulmo. We rented a 4x4 which made the ride comfortable but you could do it slowly in a car.
The roads are 2 lane and many curves. Go slow. I would not drive this at night but day time is no problem.
2. Bring water and snacks. However, you will find restaurants and a small food stall at the beach. La Palapa had beautiful views of our favorite swim spot and the best fish tacos I've ever had!!!!
3. Bring cash and card.
4. Petrol must be paid in cash!
5. Dive shops do take cards.
6. Restaurants are cash but we also paid with card as our bill was 700 pesos. So it just depends where you end up. Ask, don't just read and believe the " no cards excepted" signs.
7. At the beach to the left is white sand, great swimming in turquoise water. To the right is pebbles. You can snorkel, but is best in afternoon due to light.
8. It's worth the money to take a snorkel tour! This is the best way to see the fish as they are not all close to shore. Yes, you will see some from shore. We thought we would do this all day. We quickly realized the best reefs are far out. We have kids and the current is strong. Hire a guide for the best memories.
9. We toured with Cabo Pulmo Sports Center. There are plenty of companies to chose from at the beach but these guys were amazing. After site #1 our driver got a call that whales were in the area, he immeasurable set out for us to see...we saw a mom humpback and her calf. This is just 1 way they went out of their way to give us an amazing, unforgettable experience.
10. We showered at Cabo Pulmo Sports (sine we had snorkeled with them) lunch and swimming. Made the ride home more enjoyable.
11. Stay a night if you can. We will do this next time. Such a beautiful, protected bit of paradise. Reminded me of secluded beaches of Greece. Absolutely stunning!
12. Plan to wish time would stop. We had the best day here of our 10 in Cabo!

Beautiful reef if you can find a bout to take you, or if you can find access to the site. Getting there in a car is not a good idea specially a small car. We lost our muffler. This is a 4X4 road or a truck road. Beautiful water and site.

We drove the two plus hours to get here from Cabo San Lucas not realizing that you are not allowed to snorkel at Los Arbolitos beach without paying to go on a tour. We ended up driving to Los Frailes a bit farther and my husband snorkeled a bit near the rocks. He liked it and the beach walk was nice but since we had our own snorkel gear we were disappointed. It was pretty but not worth the long drive each way for just a few hours here.

The service of the driver (it is a 2 1/2 hour drive each way to get to Cabo Pulmo from Cabo San Lucas Harbor) and the snorkel guide was the best! They supplied a sack lunch on the way there and a great Mexican lunch at a local restaurant there after the snorkel experience. Their service and attention to all details were great. The snorkeling was beautiful, and they took us to 3 locations in the skiff. There were 6-8 guests per boat and the water was clear and warm. We were all supplied with wetsuits, snorkel gear and life vests, so the safety details were well handled. I reccoment seeing this beautiful ocean preserve, as the sea life has great variety and is plentiful. This trip was a great experience!
