Pepe was great with young children, as we traveled with a 5yo. She had a blast!
The camel ride was fun, and Pepe was entertaining.

Pepe's is a great little dive shop and pizza place! He was responsive and set up a couple of great dives for us. The wetsuits we rented were almost brand new and fit perfectly. The divemaster gave a great briefing and we swam with bull sharks and huge schools of fish. Everything was smooth and lovely. It was a gorgeous and magical dive experience. We will definitely be back to explore more in Cabo Pulmo.

On a sad note, i do not recommand at all to any divers or snorklers to do business with PEPE DIVE CENTER!!!
The equipement he has is between....old, defective and non existant...He migth have a total of 2 complete gears...and i did have to repair one bcd and one reg :(
It is only a front...he has no tanks, no boats and know no instructor since julie is gone...having not renewed his own status!!!
He just refers people to other centers and gets a commission out of it. He has no money to invest...and to pay the 2 last months of work the instructor did for him.
Being a courageaous men, he waited until i was gone to tell julie to leave with out pay with not so gracious words and a even a little pushy attitude...wow impressive!
I had to try to calm him on messenger and phone...rapidly enough, he block me everywhere...so i will not hesitate to report some facts on facebook, trip advisor, different groups...and definetly a note to PADI! This is really bad for the diving industry!
I was there for One month... PADI MASTER INSTRUCTOR
SOOO...Cabo Pulmo.....yes....in october... PEPE DIVE CENTER
no way jose....

As a couple of marine biologists me and my wife altered our honeymoon plans to include a diving experience at Cabo Pulmo. We arranged our diving at short notice and had a terrible experience with the booking process which highlighted a lack of organisation in the dive centre. However, we had heard about the success of the National Marine Park here and we wanted to see a success story for ourselves. After using up a day of our trip trying to get in touch with a dive centre with spaces we eventually got an answer from Pepe saying that we could come diving on our preferred day. We went through the process of arranging accommodation and a hire car however after telling Pepe that we would not need to stay with his contact as we found our own accommodation for half the price we suddenly received an email telling us that there was actually no spaces to come diving on the Tuesday....
We then spent longer trying to reach Pepe on the phone and eventually got an answer. We asked if there was any space to dive on the following Thursday. When he said that there was space to dive and his accommodation was free on the Wednesday night we immediately jumped at the chance and said we would take both as we didn’t want the same again happening with the cancellation. We asked for confirmation of the diving for 2 people and accommodation for one night and received an email outlining the arrangements confirmation of our reservation. We sent a deposit for this confirmation (which remained 'Pending' until I cancelled it after handing over the full payment in cash). After cancelling other arrangements to accommodate the Thursday of diving we drove down from La Paz and met Pepe. To our surprise his first question was to ask where we would be staying that night!?
"Ummmm we thought we had arranged to stay in your bungalow?" was the answer we gave whilst showing the email confirmation.
He told us that he had made a mistake and there was no room in his accommodation. This was at the height of the season and everywhere was full, the sun was setting and there was no chance for us to get back to La Paz so we were stuck in the middle of no where with no where to stay. After a bit of asking around and a lot of stress we found out that luckily there had been a cancellation in another bungalow and we could stay there.
After meeting our instructor Julie (a partner in the business) she was delighted to discover we were both Divemasters who were keen to explore the marine reserve as there was nobody else diving that day. There had been some strong northerly wind recently which could restrict the diving but gave us no information about the next days weather forecast. We later found out it was actually a significant decrease in windiness from another location as there was no WiFi as advertised at Pepes.
On the Thursday morning we arrived at the dive centre to find out there were 4 inexperienced divers joining our group and that we would not be diving at the sites Cabo Pulmo was famous for but instead would doing one at the very edge of the park in Los Frailes Bay and a second outside of the park which had only been recently discovered but was super exciting as it contained "at least 3 different corals and some wrasse!". Here was another lack of organization as it turned out one of the divers was only open water qualified and had not been in the water for 6 years! After Julie discovered this she refused to take this diver out and left him behind (why had nobody asked about this before telling him he could dive?). This left us diving with three inexperienced open water divers. We reinforced the request to dive in the Marine Reserve at the famous Jack tornado site but the Divemaster told us that she had asked the skipper but he had received orders from the coast guard not to go further north due to the wind.
As we had already paid for the travel and accommodation to Cabo Pulmo we decided to go ahead with the dives, which turned out to be very boring and not much better than the snorkelling in La Paz. This was very depressing for us as we could’ve stayed in La Paz, saved $420 and a whole lot of hassle! During our surface interval we noticed that the wind had died down and asked the boat skipper if we could go into the marine reserve. He told us that the wind wasn’t a problem for going further north that day and had told Julie that but she had asked to stay in the sheltered bay because we had inexperienced divers with us. This was incredibly frustrating – most dive centres would make some effort to assign different Divemasters to groups of differing abilities (especially on their honeymoon!) so that everyone can enjoy the experience. The open water divers were actually fine and would’ve had no problem diving in slightly more challenging conditions. There was one moment when they kicked up the bottom in a sandy area with no life and Julie went balistic with them.
All in all, we spent a lot of money and had a very negative experience in Cabo Pulmo. After spending a day trying to contact all the dive centres there, it seems that many of them are pretty useless. If you are an experienced diver and want to dive here, I would suggest going to the boat skippers directly and take your own kit then you can dive where ever you like without pouring money into a useless diving business. Or at least avoid this dive shop and go somewhere with a bit of organisation (I have read about a couple on trip advisor).

We enjoyed the cozy patio in the sand, Frida the friendly dog to play with, a hammock to wait for our food in, and a deep dish style pizza. A small was big enough for two with an order of fish tacos as well. Thick base but no edge crust, lots of cheese all the way to the edge. Great simple American style dish to satisfy your cravings (even if you're Canadian like us). Good prices, guests a mix of locals and travellers.

While we didn't use Pepe for our water needs, we did use him for our hunger. Since Cabo Pulmo is in the middle of nowhere, when someone offers pizza..you get what you get. But....Pepe did not disappoint! He learned his skills while working in Chicago and he learned well. He was very proud of his creation (as well he should have been!) and even pointed to the eggplant that he'd added to the veggie pizza. His end product was wonderful and we were very happy to have met the creator as well.

Pepe is a great guide!
We actually book our dive with a different operator in Cabo Pulmo, but they were short-handed and asked Pepe to take us out diving. Had a fantastic time. Thanks for the great dive, Pepe!
