In the front square of the cathedral is the Chapel of St. Michael, dating back to the 13th century. It is now the permanent museum of the Venzone mummies. It is a very beautiful round building that looks particularly beautiful in bright sunshine against the backdrop of the mountains.
The discovery of the almost forty mummies exhumed from the tombs inside and outside the cathedral dates back to 1647. That year the first mummy, known today as the hunchback - "il gobbo" - was brought to light. The natural mummification of the bodies on display was caused by the particular environmental conditions that occurred in some of the tombs, in which Hypha bombicina Pers. This is a mold that has the property of drying out the tissues and thus preventing decomposition.

We were a little impressed, but intrigued we went down to see the mummies of Venzone. The natural mummification of the bodies is due to environmental conditions that occur in some tombs of the cathedral thanks to a mold that dehydrates the tissues, inhibiting their decomposition. The process takes place on average within a year of burial. The oldest mummy is that of Gobbo which was discovered in 1647 in a fourteenth-century tomb, while the other, more recent ones date back to the 18th-19th centuries.

La struttura è del XIII secolo.

Sehr interessante Mumien bei deren Betrachtung ein mulmiges Gefühl aufkommt. Leider reflektiert die Beleuchtung an der Oberfläche der Glasabdeckungen so stark, dass man sie nicht richtig betrachten kann. Ausserdem kann man nur am Fußende stehen und so die Köpfe nicht genau betrachten. Schade. Die Mumien selbst wären sehr interessant, aber sie sind schlecht präsentiert.

Facile da raggiungere e da visitare. All’esterno della cripta ci sono le indicazioni idonee. Son conservate solo 5 mummie ma sono intatte . Si accede tramite un tornello e un gettone che si acquista nel bar vicino . Costo 2 euro . L’ambiente e’ piccolissimo ma interessante. Da vedere

Pensavo ci fosse un'esposizione migliore delle mummie, in realtà la cripta esternamente è curata e ben tenuta ed effettivamente incuriosisce. L'interno non rispecchia l'esterno perché ci sono 5 mummie dentro 5 frigoriferi, una scala per scendere e una per risalire e fine.

sicuramente qualcosa di straordinario a dir poco...l unica cosa sarei stata ben lieta di pagare anche 5 euro ma la disposizione delle teche dovrebbero essere alzate un pochino in maniera di dare la possibilità di vedere non soltanto la parte inferiore...e poi la descrizione invece di essere messa all'entrata dove ce gente che aspetta per entrare visto il periodo un po particolare andrebbe spostata....cmq proprio vero abbiamo tante cose ma tenute così....grazieeeeee
