A delightful walk - woods, waterfalls, moorland and lead mining heritage. An easy walk - a bit uphill (and easiest if you do the route clockwise). Views are stunning.

This is a lovely walk if you like breath taking views and are interested in history of the mining in the area

Mostly easy walking although care is needed in a few places, the path follows the stream in a wooded valley, past old mine workings then up onto the moors with superb views.

My dad use to take me here as a child and I have recently been back several times after searching all over to find where it was. Its a lovely walk although a little hidden to get too. Small tumblings waterfalls, picturesque woods, an old abandoned quarry with lots of minerals and gems to find if you look closely! I often spend ages here hunting through the rocks to find lots of fluorite and other minerals. If you take the longer route its steep at the top but worth it for the views!

Start at high town. Fabulous waterfall lovely stream hills, ancient workings, lots of history, old quarries this walk has everything. Don t tell too many people though !!

This is a lovely, easy walk from Westgate through Slitt Wood to the old mine workings and then on to the moor. There are lovely waterfalls through the woods, and we have seen sea trout leaping as you enter the woods.
The mine workings are fascinating, with information boards to help interpret the landscape.
Then out into the wild moors, passing several mine entrances, and back along the track to Westgate.
A smashing walk, suitable for people who are not strong walkers.

We set off from Westgate and followed the path that leads past old mill works, small waterfalls and a scenic wood. It is a steady climb over a mile and a half so it isnt too taxing.. near the top of the hill is a split in the ways you can go... we headed west to blackde e and then dropped down onto the river following it back into Westgate behind the pub, a local micro brewery. This was a better walk than I thought it maybe as I have always tended to drive through and not stop. I would now change that and suggest its a nice couple of hours well spent.

A local person recommended this as a short easy interesting walk which proved to be good advice. The entrance from the village has a footpath sign between buildings, fairly discrete and a bit tucked away, easy to miss. At the lower gate entrance it proclaims it is a Nature Reserve, Do Not Pick the Flowers at risk of a £500 fine. The path has a good surface, you could take a pushchair. It gradually rises up the hillside at a steady rate beside a delightful tumbling stream with a few small waterfalls and rapids. There is a mix of woodland and species rich grassland which must have lots of colourful flowers in the spring.
The path has been well maintained recently, with a new surface applied, and a couple of sections where the stream washed away the bankside path have been well restored with stone filled gabions. After a steady 15-20 minute rise you arrive at the site of the old lead mining area, where there are interpretation panels and the ruins of old buildings. Above is a dam on the left, and a track on the right climbs up through spoil heaps to offer fine views across the river Wear valley.
The locals have spent quite a lot of time and effort on the path maintenance and interpretation, and are to be congratulated on a job well done, and appreciated by us visitors. We continued ahead to the road, returning back down to the village, A very pleasant informative circular walk of a couple of miles,very enjoyable,well worth doing. combining nature conservation ,industrial archaeology and local history, a little gem not to be missed

Sorry posted before I'd finished. Need to know how far the shortest circular walk is as have just had hip replacement and can do about 3km but not much more. Thanks.
