I have always wanted to experience the multitude of blues, the white sands, and the clarity of water of the Bahamas. I was not disappointed in the beauty of nature, and during our 5-day stay with my spouse, we came to appreciate the resilience of the many beings that call it home. Advertised as Ecotourism destination by the Bahama Tourism organization and lured by The Cay House with the promise of quiet luxury, we could not have been more disappointed. What we experienced was mass tourism, disregard for the natural environment, and predominant focus on consumption -- whether it be drinking or fishing. Our best experience was a day with a local guide Shine who is starting to navigate from fishing to more sustainable forms of tourism like wildlife viewing and snorkeling. We also acknowledge the excellent work by Josley who manages The Cay House.
Rooms
The rooms are modern and beautifully decorated, but very small. We hardly had enough space to walk around the bed and fit our suitcase in the little closet. The beds are very soft and comfortable, but the wooden lounge chairs outside are just frames with no padding. Josely would bring us camping chairs when we could not sit anywhere else because all wooden surfaces were uncomfortable. The carefully curated pictures posted by the owner are misleading. We happened to be there on our own, but I wonder if it would be more noisy with other people. There are a total of 4 rooms next to each other, all located on one level of a small house. We also learned that the next building is actually a night club, but luckily it was closed during our stay. More importantly, the local infrastructure simply is not there. During our 5-day stay, we had three days of intermittent power outages and two days of clogged pipes from the blocked septic tank. The most unnerving thing was sitting in pitch black alone in the house on our second night, with door and window shutters covered, nowhere to go and nothing to do. Other times we had to sit in wet salty clothes after coming back from the beach. We did not receive an apology from the owner. On the occasion of the septic tank fiasco, we had two days of workers (one always holding and drinking a bottle of beer) opening up the septic tank and then draining it directly into the bushes near the house. The tank sits only few meters from the terrace where we sit. This is the only sitting area outside, and on the other side of the house there are two tables and wooden chairs which are not for lounging. Needless to say, we could not sit there due to the smell. We were shocked the workers just drained the raw sewage into the bushes right next to the property.
Nearby Activities
The only activity is beach, sea and sun. This sounded very good to me before we got to the location. All beaches are seriously littered, from large dilapidated buildings on the beach and broken boats, to smaller items like tires, all matter of junk caught in fishing nets and tangled rope, bottles and cans (including broken glass), discarded old clothes, used condoms, broken bits of plastic, and the ever present conch shells which we found disrespectfully discarded everywhere we went. More interesting items included a freezer (seen on one picture) that was dragged into the water and its pieces discarded about. Another time we came across a post party scene with two large piles of bottles and cans, and a still burning fire which we quickly put out. The only two clean beaches we found were maintained by "owners" -- Swain's Cay Lodge and a small beach by the blue hole with private houses by American and Norwegian families.
Walkability
The only walkability would be to one or two local beaches which were littered with garbage. We used bikes instead to explore the areas nearby. We went as far as the airport, but the hot weather and the hard seats made it difficult to continue any further.
Food & Drinks
Breakfast was included, but other meals were very difficult to find. A small shop with poor selection of fresh food was located 10 minutes by bike. We ate lunch once at Swain's Cay Lodge, $15 US each for a canned tuna sandwich. We arranged later with Josley, the lady who manages the house, to have another cooked meal for additional fee. Having read the two reviews of 5 stars, we were very surprised not to find fresh local fruit (there is no fruit stand or fruit market anywhere near) or fresh local seafood (other than in town close to the airport). A taxi to the airport costs $20 US one way.
Noteworthy Details
Things I wish I knew before booking The Cay House:
1. This is not a hotel but rather a small house.
2. The pictures are carefully curated by the owner, Cleo, to reflect a feeling of luxury, which is simply not there. Basic things like meals, safety and comfort are not provided. When I reached out after two days to ask for one additional meal per day, Cleo did not have the courtesy to reply.
3. Pertaining to safety, you will be there on your own from about 4:00 pm to early morning at 7:00 or 8:00 am. Josely is the woman who manages the house and she does an EXCELLENT job. She was the best thing about our stay there. Otherwise, be prepared to be on your own during a power outage with no way to reach out for help.
4. The two terraces -- one a sitting area and one a dining area -- have one side facing the street and small shrubs which do not block the view. It is both dusty and noisy when cars pass by. For the most part, it was not busy during our stay but there were times of the day when it got busier and we had to go elsewhere.
5. Littered beaches are overwhelming and no one is transparent about it. I did not do my typical due diligence as I saw The Cay House among the listings on the official Bahamas Tourism website with reference to Ecotourism. Additionally, Andros was listed as the island with most wilderness. I see now the deception and irresponsible green washing by the Bahamas Tourism, as well as The Cay House. Needless to say, our first visit will be the last.
6. Contrary to the glossy brochure of the Bahamas Tourism, it is not an ecotourism destination. Besides the serious issue of littered beaches, there is the more serious issue of declining population of conch, with scientists predicting its disappearance in as little as six years.

Dear Agnes, We find your review interesting. The Cay House website displays photos of the actual rooms and other photos are of actual areas around Mangrove Cay. It is also quite clearly stated on the website that it is a house with four rooms. (We do operate as a licensed hotel) So nothing is misleading. We did our best to make your stay at The Cay House and Mangrove Cay enjoyable. We offered a personally prepared welcome basket. Our staff prepared breakfast to accommodate times convenient for you, as well as dinner when requested. I reached out to the Tour Guide to arrange the west side tour, and provided you with his contact for direct communication. To accommodate you, we even absorbed the transaction cost by agreeing to process your payment to the Tour Guide, which you were advised in advance should have been paid directly to him. Our staff also attempted to arrange a land nature tour guide who came to The Cay House, however you had gone out. You were advised in advance of taxi fare from the airport, and here $20 is not unreasonable for a taxi. The lounge area are furnished with lounge chairs, and in your room there was a basket with beach towels and extra blankets for use if needed. There was no difficulty with food as it was noted on the website and our staff advised you that she was available to prepare lunch and dinner if needed, and she actually did prepare dinner two evenings which you did not mention. She spoke with you about the dinner and even offered them at $12 each which was essentially at cost, so it was a misrepresentation to say that I did not respond. Also on the night of the power outage, which was an island wide outage, I contacted two staff and each of them visited separately to ensure that you were okay and provide alternative lighting. I also emailed you the following morning apologizing and indicating that both of them should have been there to check on you. I do not know why you felt you were stuck in your wet swimwear as at no time was there an issue with the facility in your room or access to your room. The use of complimentary bicycles were optional, there was also the option of rental cars or taxi if you choose. Mangrove Cay is an island and would not have all of the conveniences as city living. The store hours are not as late as you would find in the city. We did have fresh fruits available at The Cay House during your stay. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay, we did try our endeavour best to make you comfortable and provide an enjoyable stay. It would have been good to see other photos of your stay, like the sea tour, west side exploration, snorkeling and clean beaches, etc.
