Hi Peter and Liz,
You are going to Kovalam and staying at the Turtle on the beach. The hotel benefits from a very central location to both Hawa beach and Lighthouse beach. Both beaches are walkable from the hotel. If you come out of the hotel exit and turn to your right, walk down a very short distance, past the Western Union money exchange, go down the slight slope on your left and this will bring you right on the beach. Walking through the beach will bring you towards Lighthouse beach where you'll find many cafes and restaurants, serving fantastic sea food, alcoholic drinks as well as snacks, morning breakfast. Although the hotel is not licensed, I believe they allow you to bring your own drinks. I hope you have booked seaview room cuz the standard rooms are not well equipped or clean or pleasant. Top floor rooms are the best. The management and staff are very helpful. Food is average, but buffets some days are not bad. You can take a bus just past the Western Union mentioned above to Trivandrum. It costs just 26 rupees and you get the feel of the place whilst riding on the bus. The orange coloured bus No 111 or 111A takes you right into East Fort. Here you can visit the famous Padmanaswamy temple and a small lake. Very bustling place with shops. If you remain on the bus it will take you literally outside the popular Pothys department store which is worth a visit. You can of course hire a taxi right outside the hotel for a half day and ask the driver to show you around Trivandrum. This should cost around 1500 rupees. Whist you are in Trivandrum you can break for lunch at the Arya Nivas which is a vegetarian restaurant with some great dishes like chilli paneer, dosa etc. You can also book a day trip down to Varkala which is a cliff top shops, restaurants with the Paapnasaam beach. Interesting walk along the cliffs top, stop for a coffee and just chill. Quite a way down on the cliffs you come to a spice shop. Don't forget to buy some saffron, cinnamon and cardamom, which is the best ever.
You'll really enjoy your first visit to Kerala and not regret it. If you need any more info feel free to ask. Regards
