Abartig.
We had another memorable experience staying over at a NWR facility in Luderitz. After a long day out viewing The Wild Horses, Kolmanskuppe and climbing to the Diaz Point for photos, we reached our destination at Shark Island. Just like the other NWR facilities we have stayed in, they need some work and some investment to get up to standard. That said, the views were amazing, the sunset was awesome and the guards patrolled the entire night for the safety of the campers. The ablution facilities work, the site was clean and the common kitchen seemed OK. The was a shared water point between every 2 sites, and it was slightly disappointing that only every second campsite had electricity due to cables and plug points being removed or vandalized. Decent value for money, but prices could be increased if the facilities were maintained and improved a little more. …
My advice would be to check the weather report before you go. We arrived to gale force winds and freezing weather after a long day travelling. We had to find alternative accommodation which is a challenge if you are travelling in a big group! Stayed a Obelix Guest House which was great and the owner bent over backwards to accommodate us!
This is an excellent campsite, although it can be very windy. On the last visit in April 2019 the wind wasn't too bad, so the visit was very enjoyable. The ablutions need to be renovated, but at least we had warm water, and the ablutions were clean. The site is close to the town of Luderitz, so is conveniently located to stores and restaurants.
This "island" was used between 1904-1907 during the German occupation. It was set up for prisoners; men. women and children. Most that were brought here (primarily local tribal inhabitants) and died here. Being banished here was for most a death sentence that would come from malnutrition, disease or torture. Prisoners were fed a cup of uncooked rice per day. Some 3,000+ prisoners died here. I cannot imagine such treatment from an occupier, but this was only the beginning for the German's and what they would later do back home. BOTTOM LINE: Today the 'island" is no more an island but filled in and connected to the shore and cruise dock. There are some large weathered boulders to shoot photos of. In addition, the island today is used today by campers and camper rigs visiting the Luderitz area. There are electrical hook-ups too. There are some views from the end of the road but nothing to go out of your way to see. I would not consider this a must see, but the history here and what happened over 100 years ago is. Not sure why it is called Shark Island, one rumor was that the guards tossed the dead bodies into the sea for the sharks to dispose of them but I don't believe that since 3000 skulls of those who died were sent back to Germany for studying. MY RATING: 4/10. Old building at the top of the hill is supposed to be rental-able. There is a metal tower beacon light on the top also.…
