This is for frequent B&B goers. Is it now customary to tip the entire staff at a B&B? Although I know people often leave a tip in the room for the housecleaning staff, I thought that other services were supplied by the innkeeper and gratuities were not expected, just as one does not tip the owner of a salon. If the innkeeper must hire help, it is up to them to pay the staff an equitable wage.
I ask this because we were asked to leave a tip on our bill at this inn, and the recommended amount was $60. We were certainly not going to leave such a large gratuity, and my husband felt very uncomfortable with the inn sitter, as she called herself, standing over him and watching what he did.
We stayed at inns twice in the months before this. One suggested tips for housecleaning and the person who set up the breakfast buffet, but there was no pressure. The second inn in Mass. said nothing about any gratuities.
We used to stay in B&Bs frequently in the past but had not done so for a while till this summer. We were surprised by this change.
I would like to know what others think.

Thank you for your questions and thoughts. All B&Bs have staff that are not visible yet have direct influence on their guests' stays. These may include kitchen workers, maintenance, staff that help with luggage, clean the general areas, etc., in addition to the housekeepers, and wait staff. Similarly, restaurants, hair salons, hotels, cruise ships, etc.., share/split the gratuity with the staff does not have immediate contact with the patron.
Gratuities are a direct correlation with service delivered and are never mandated or expected. They are absolutely optional and appreciated.
Many lodging facilities provide envelopes or boxes in their guestrooms for cash gratuities. Over the years, travelers have requested the option of using credit cards.
The most important thing to remember, gratuities are provided to service staff not as a norm but in recognition of the service performed and the amount is always discretionary.
If we get a room on the second floor is there someone to help us with our luggage?
