I booked this room for 1 night before a solo travel tour down the east coast. I had already done 2 days prior in NYC and wanted somewhere closer to my meeting point as I had an early start so found this. I booked a single room as I hadn't had much experience in hostels. I arrived late so got a taxi to the property rather than walking from the train station after reading some questionable reviews of the area, and it appears to be run out of a residential property, as it's not easily signposted. A few days before I arrived, I received a message through booking.com with the front door entry code as well as my room code. This was handy, although it took me a few goes to enter my room code correctly due to there being several numbers per button which made it confusing. As I was hauling my suitcase up the stairs, I was met by the owner of the hostel, who was a lovely woman and she showed me where everything was. I was right next to the bathroom, which was the most modern part of the hostel, and was lovely. The rest of the property while homely needed updating to a more fresh and clean look. My room was clean and a good size with a towel provided. I wouldn't recommend staying here for longer than a night or two, due to it being about an hour outside of NYC.…
We booked the studio which looked great on the photos. When we arrived we were told it had been changed to an unfinished attic room with no bathroom or kitchen (and still had dangerously exposed electricity sockets) and that we could shower in the communal bathroom downstairs but couldn’t use the communal kitchen as the hostel had ‘helped’ another traveller by selling him space to sleep in the kitchen. We were pressured to sign the bill ASAP without a discount. The hostel is operating out of a residential house 55 mins walk from EWR airport and we suspected it was illegal and also had issues walking to the airport in the morning as there’s a highway with no sidewalk, we ended up asking to use the shuttle bus of a kind nearby hotel. The next day I messaged the hostel asking for a discount and politely expressing my disappointment at the situation, they wrote a very strange message back claiming they had told everyone of the change when in fact all they had done was sent some photos of a different room without any context along with the keypad login info. I called Booking.com and they refunded the entire amount (THANK YOU BOOKING.COM!) and are taking the issue up with the hostel.…
The hostel itself is lovely, very clean and offers a kitchen and impressive bathroom. However the neighbourhood is not one to be walking around in and especially as a solo visitor made me need to stay inside during my stay. Therefore the hostel is okay if you plan to arrive late and leave early, however long stays or staying for the location is not ideal.
