I have stayed here twice, the first time in 2004. The couple who own it are very friendly but speak hardly any English. The rooms are very cheap, but getting more expensive with the pound weakening against the THB. It was 60THb to the pound when I was last there and now its around 48THB to the pound, so on current exchange will cost you around £4 a night, that's around $7US.
The rooms are large but very basic, the mattress and pillow are of usual cheap Asian standard with fan and cold water shower but very clean. I always ended up in one of the rooms in the back of the hotel so noise was not to bad, I did not get woken up by any noise, and if you do, well what do you expect, you're in Asia!
In the mornings the old guy opens up a coffee shop downstairs from 7am to 8.30am, serving hot/cold drinks and deep fired dough sticks (Pa Tong Go) which gets the day off to a good start. Do ask him the times in case I am mistaken.
This place is ideal for a backpacker, someone who is on a budget and who wants to support small local businesses. Ask to see the room first to make sure you are happy with it.
I fear the next time I return to Nakhon Si Thammarat he and his hotel will be gone, I hope not. In my opinion, places like Thai Lee Hotel make traveling more real and interesting.
