What a wonderful place to stay. Run by the Marron people. Cabins/cottages well equipped, clean, good and comfortable beds. Great food, made by the host himself. Really a very nice place to relax in the jungle of Suriname.

Back in the '90's, Kumalu used to be a beautiful resort in the Amazone Rainforest of Surinam. I therefor was looking forward to it very much, visiting this place again after almost 18 years. Well, in 18 years a lot has changed. 5 of the cabins have been burned down an the the 3 remaining private cabins do not have a proper roof. Plastic covers the holes in the roof to prevent leakage in the lodges. The sinks, toilets and showers on the premises are completely run down and the the mattresses and pilows in the dormitory lodge are full of stains, fungus and have a funky smell. With the right management they could give this place back its glory from the beginning days. The surroundings are amazing, but that is the most positive point for now.

Kumalu bestaat uit een aantal eenvoudige hutjes op een eilandje aan het begin van de Boven Suriname, bij de splitsing van de Gran Rio en Pikin Rio. Er is stroom, sommige hutjes hebben eigen douche en toilet en er zijn overdekte hangmat plekken waar je heerlijk kunt relaxen met uitzicht over het water waar je af en toe de korjalen tussen de rotsen door ziet slalommen. Er liggen een paar marron dorpjes vlak bij waar je het lokale leven kunt bekijken en de mensen zeer vriendelijk zijn zonder jouw als toerist raar aan te kijken of ongewild op je af komen. Er is altijd leven langs de rivier met wassende en vissende bewoners. Als er toevallig, zoals in ons geval, een feest is ter ere van een overledene is het geweldig om dit mee te maken, feesten, dansen tot diep in de nacht. De Tappawatra Sula ligt om de hoek en is heerlijk om te zwemmen en een water massage te nemen of op piranhas te vissen. Wees niet bang voor deze vissen, ze hebben eten genoeg dus zullen jou met rust laten. Je kan ook een wandeling naar de Ananasberg doen waar je een mooi uitzicht hebt en verse ananas kunt eten. Wij zijn hier 2 dagen geweest tijdens een lodge hopping tour over de rivier. Kumalu was het verste punt op 3,5 uur varen vanaf Atjoni. Maar veel leuker en relaxter is dus om tussenstops te maken bij andere eenvoudige lodges. Back to basic, dicht bij de Marron cultuur en een geweldige ervaring! Dit kan via diverse reisagenten of direct via Stichting lodgehopping Bovensuriname. Daarbij steun je de kleine lokale ondernemers en wordt de hele tour verzorgt met eigen gids, bootsman, eten en drinken. Een echte aanrader voor een unieke ervaring in het binnenland. …

I booked the lodge last february for a 2 nights tour. The lodge wrote "I have double checked the prices and the tour will cost 600euro's, thats about 650$ for the weekend, including the flight to the interior v.v, food 3 times a day and trips(tapawatra sula, village trip and the pine-apple tree). the date is 19 and return on 21 of Octobre 2016." so there was no doubt there was flights for my dates and they never said the flights were not scheduled. Few months before my trip, i tried to know the schedules for the paid flights and they never answer to my numerous emails. Finally i learned that there was no flights (so why they requested the full payment ?) and they told me i have to take local transports with bus and boats - so almost one full day to reach the lodge and another one to come back to Paramaribo. So it was ridiculous to spend so much time in transport for only 2 nights and also i have a physical condition which makes impossible such option. So i requested the cancellation and full refund of the tour and also they never replied. So after numerous emails without any refund, i am out of patience and i want to inform all travelers that this company is dishonnest : they knew there was a problem with flights but they sold them and never mentionned it wasn't scheduled flights. So after when they have the full payment they can say : sorry there is no flights because travelers are trapped and they are obliged to spend 2 days with local transports just to spend 1 full day at the lodge. So they have been very dishonnest to attract tourists in their lodge and now they refused to refund my money. I have all emails to prove that situation and now i will have to take a lawyer in Suriname to get my money back and also i will complaint officially to Surinam authorities for the nasty practices of this Kumalu Dream Island which is in fact the Kumalu Nightmare island. Now my vacations in Suriname will be a complete nightmare because i have to spend time with a lawyer and authorities in order to recover my money. So never trust that lodge and find another one with more honnest owners.…

Diep in de Jungle van Suriname aan de BovenSuriname rivier ligt de lodge Kumalu. De tocht ernaar toe is op zich al een geweldige ervaring eerst met de bus ca. 160 KM naar Antjoni en vandaar met een korjaal nog ca. 3,5 uur stroomopwaarts de Suriname rivier op. Het kan ook sneller met een binnenlandse vlucht 3x per week. Kumalu ligt op een eiland midden in de rivier, de hutten zijn voor 2 of meerdere personen. Activiteiten zijn o.a. het bezoeken van de Grandman (opperhoofd) van de locale bevolking, fietsen, vissen of een massage onder de waterval en s'avond kampvuur. Ook is het eten, door locale mensen bereidt, smakelijk en ruim voldoende. Zelfs is er elektriciteit door middel van zonnepanelen voorhanden, midden in de jungle primitief en luxe. Indien je naar Suriname op vakantie ga is dit een aanrader om daar een aantal dagen door te brengen.…
