Was allowed to visit the renovation site which is a busy beehive managed by a retired army officer who speaks some English.
Renovation works in full swing; wondering though when seeing the „skills“ of the workers and the „care“ on items like the fire places and the solid wooden floor/staircase.
Expect reopening in two years, according to the site manager; despite the mess and the sometimes gruesome way the workers are at it it still oozes the same atmosphere as 41 years ago, when I stayed at the Mother of all Colonial Hotels. Will be back

This was on the tour route and we spent all of 15 minutes here probably because it has a reputation of being haunted.
It has a tenuous look of the hotel in The Shining with Jack Nicholson but apart from that it's not worth a trip.
In it's hey dey it would of been something special but it's virtually empty inside and when we arrived someone was belting out a song on a karaoke machine that was doing our heads in.
I'm sure one day this place will be restored to it's grandeur but until then, I'd give it a miss.

The former Candicraig Hotel (British Raj Chummery) has closed and undergoing renovation. You may visit the hotel and we were fortunate to have one of the developers walk us around explaining his vision of renovating the original structure while adding more modern in the back. We wish him well

We definitely agree with the 'haunted house' description. It's a gorgeous building with a well kept garden, but inside the hotel was virtually empty and nothing has been done to improve it for decades. Go to visit if you stay in Pyin Oo Lwin, but there are other places of much better value to stay in. We stayed for two nights and just had to find somewhere else.
